3.08 and 3.16E14 protons in the beams this evening.
174% the design luminosity after optimization.
The previous run started 6:46 and had 500/pb. This run had 200/pb already. If the beams don't get dumped, we get a new 24 hour record with a bit more than 0.8/fb.
Edit: ~335/pb (ATLAS shows 331, CMS shows 343), so we have more than 0.8/fb in 24 hours.
A record run starting at 23:43 is good for "luminosity in a day" records as well...
Higgs cross section at the Tevatron was about 1 pb, at 10/fb each experiment had 10,000 Higgs bosons. The LHC has 50 pb cross section, to collect 10,000 Higgs bosons it only needs 200/pb (for each experiment separately). In the last 24 hours the LHC produced 4 times as many Higgs bosons as the Tevatron in its whole operational history.
The top pair production cross section was about 7.5 pb, while the LHC has 830 pb. The ratio is even larger by a factor 2. In the last 24 hours the LHC produced 8 times as many top quarks as the Tevatron in its whole operational history.
