For IRC, some java applet/webstart exist, but you still need to open, and most likely register, a chat room on a irc server.

Also, today IRC clients are integrated in a lot of IM softwares.

CMS status page says collisions coming next:
6 Dec, 2:15, 4x4 Collisions to come next

LHC informs us that we go for 4-on-4 bunches with collisions next.

The history of why we care about debunched beams... Firstly the bunch-train profile of the LHC has a big gap (the abort gap) at the end which allows the dump kickers to ramp up with no particles passing, otherwise it would spray them as the kicker ramped.

The Tevatron has an identical dump setup - you don't want to ramp kickers with beam. On one occasion, a fully accelerated beam was in the Tevatron when for a variety of reasons the beam debunched. This means that you lose the abort gap. A beam dump was triggered, but with no abort gap, and with CDF (one of the Tevatron experiments) just upstream of the dump kickers, their silicon detector got sprayed with very high energy protons, wiping out a proportion of the sensing and electronics.

The LHC has protection mechanisms in place to ensure that debunched beam dumps are safe(r), and these need to be tested, along with all the other machine protection systems.
