LHC Cycle Info
Some nice info on the progress page today:
End of Fill studies and requested time allocated - http://lhc-commissioning.web.cern.ch/lh ... udies.xlsx
Procedure from end of ramp to physics (basically, how to run the LHC in Physics mode!) - http://lhc-commissioning.web.cern.ch/lh ... edure.docx

Re: LHC Cycle Info
Now that looks like a check list to me. I guess it takes a while to figure out what the correct procedures are and they will change and the operators need to strictly follow them.

Whats with those file names adding a x at the end ??

Re: LHC Cycle Info
M$ Office 2007 documents have default file names with the x at the end.
Re: LHC Cycle Info
No kidding... M$ finally went to 4 char file names ? omg..
and what was wrong with .doc and .xls ? hahahahaha

Re: LHC Cycle Info
The files with the x at the end of extension are different format, a bit similar to the open document (MS just must do everything their way). They still support old .doc and .xls though, you can save or read files in that format but they'll not get updates with new features etc.Xymox wrote:No kidding... Re: LHC Cycle Info
a couple Beam Setup questions:
what is precycling?
why is the E set to 297 GeV during beam setup? I always see it parked there prior to ramping up to 450 GeV for injection...
any clues on deciphering the SPS Visitar pages?

Re: LHC Cycle Info
Precycling is running all beam instruments (magnets etc) through a well defined cycle to avoid any magnetic hysteresis and changes to magnetic and electric fields caused by previous magnetic levels. It's similar to precision measuring instruments where you are only allowed to turn the screw in one direction and if you need to go back you must fully unscrew it and start again. Using the base energy level is part of it.
Re: LHC Cycle Info
The vertical line gives the current position in the cycle. The blue line is proton intensity, the white line magnetic field strength (beam energy). I am not sure about the yellow line...pixelmasseuse wrote:any clues on deciphering the SPS Visitar pages?

thanks... I eventually figured out that by manually refreshing the SPS1 display, you can see the movement of the vertical line better.
