If I understand this right it is helping the theoretical physicists model the background for the LHC. They need this help because the practical physicists hog all the ocmputing power at CERN with the data from the LHC. If they get 40,000 people to sign up for this they'll have the equivalent data output of the real LHC !!

For those of you who find the instructions a little long here is a summary -

Download Virtual Box - http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
Install using the default settings.

Download BOINC - http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php
Install using the default settings

Start BOINC and follow these instructions to set it up - http://boinc01.cern.ch/attaching-boinc

I have some doubts about their recommended CPU settings, I found my machine getting a little sluggish at times as it was running in background all the time. I'm still tinkering to find the optimum settings.

Just a word of warning:
Your computer will need at least 512 MB of RAM and more than 9 GB of free disk space for hosting the experiments. If your computer does not meet these requirements, the project will not send you any jobs, sorry! But if you do have those free resources, you are ready to start.
LHC@Home 2 is not an average BOINC application.
