Dark Matter finally found?
Hi all, I'm not sure if someone had already brought this up or not, (about the below possible discovery) if they have I'm really sorry to post twice but i couldnt find anything.
One of the aims of the LHC is to search for evidence of dark matter, and well it could be that another experiement has beat them to it, if true its a big thing for sure!.
I first heard about this here:
http://resonaances.blogspot.com/2009/12 ... vered.html
but well the blogs first comments didnt make me take it serious enough, however now mainstream Media science sections have started reporting it:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/ ... -mine.html
Anyway just throwing this out there to anyone that knows alot about this stuff or is interested , maybe it will lead to more reports and then an announcement.
have fun

That's an interesting development.
Nothing travels faster than the speed of light with the possible exception of bad news, which obeys its own special laws.

Whoa... beyond interesting
Re: Dark Matter finally found?
LHC collisions, dark matter found, mysterious spiral appearing in Norway..
It's been a few interesting days.

It looks as if the LHC has some more competition http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg2 ... e-lhc.html
Re: Dark Matter finally found?
It'd be so funny if after all the hype the LHC didn't discover anything new because a telescope in space found it first
Re: Dark Matter finally found?
WIMPs are not found, yet!
The CDMSII didn't found a WIMP. They found 2 WIMP like signals events at a background of 1. This is not really a significant level. But there are many other experiments and CDMS will upgraded.

I think it is not important that one experiment found something. A theory is really good if it can explain a lot of different experiments. So even if the Higgs is found in a space experiment, it also necessary to find them at the LHC.
On the other side I thing it is much more important that an experiment found nothing and defines a new level of significance, because then also many theories could be excluded.

There is a 23% chance its not dark matter..
There is a 77% chance it is.
I guess you have to look at the glass half full or empty I suppose..
BUT only 2 signals is cause for suspicion. As you mention we will know soon enough as other experiments and the LHC all produce results in the next year ...

Ah ... That famous glass - is it half-full or half-empty?
NEITHER, it is simply too big.
