anyone know if there is any way to get the CMS "Fireworks Event Display Software"? (for windows?) and then of course somehow find a feed for it? :?:

Schottky measurements are done by passing the beam through the 2 plates of a capacitor and give extremely detailed results of many beam parameters without disturbing the beam.

Lhc Beam Dumping system.

Because of the amount of energy involved, they can't just turn the beams off. The Beams need to be Dumped in a controlled fashion.

A much more technical explanation is here :http://epaper.kek.jp/e08/papers/wepp059.pdf

Schottky measurement seems to be a way of measuring the beam using capacitance without disturbing the beam. Its a bit beyond me tho so I don't guarantee that.

No worries....glad to help

Google is excellent at finding all this stuff..just add lhc to the query like "lbds lhc"

some background on Schottky measurements...

this has less math, more diagrams:

The big deal at the moment seems to be squeezing the beams. Is there any URL where we can see the squeeze numbers as they happen? I thought op vistars lhcconfig was showing it but that doesn't update the Beta as things change. :)

I've had people question the amount of money the LHC costs....This is the answer I've come up with.

Why do we need to spend huge amounts of money on the LHC when we could spend it on Starving Children/Cancer Research etc?

There are many answers. The one I like is: We are learning what makes the universe work. The more we understand, the more we can do. An analogy would be the humble kitchen stove. The more we understand it, the more use we can get out of it.
No-one knows what we will discover with the LHC, but we do know that we will find completely new knowledge. If we wish to develop new ways to do things, like fight cancer or grow crops better, we need new knowledge to do it.

If you like it please feel free to use it.

I think it is human nature to push boundaries and it is important that as a society we continue to do this. Ultimately what drives improvement is innovation and discovery not wise investment in food or even infrastructure. Blue-sky thinking and research is crucial, without it we will stagnate as a society.

I agree with that as strongly as it is possible to agree with anything.

Believe it or not..I actually have a Question Mark tattooed on my arm..... :)

I use the other reason when people just don't get the deeper one.
