Are they preparing the machine for the heavy ion experiment already?

I don't think theres any preparations for heavy ion physics until after November's technical stop.

That plan does show them putting ions in the SPS from this time. Perhaps they will be able to try that while the LHC is circulating proton beams.

Man it sure is taking a long time for the bunch trains to be commissioned. It looks like they are almost done though and we should see stable beams next week (hopefully). Just reading the progress reports really shows you how complicated the LHC is. It is impressive that they are able to make so many different variables come together so they are able to collide the beams.
