10 Bunches ??

Post by Xymox » Wed Mar 24, 2010 4:34 am

Ok im confuzed, but maybe excited...

It looks like they just injected 10 bunches into the LHC ring. A first as far as I know.. They only did 4x4 last year...

10 bunches would be a record for sure for the LHC..

BUT the intensity looks too low for 10...

And 100 hour lifetime... NICE....

You know, doing a 10x10 AND ramping to 3.5TeV for collisions for the press day would be pretty spectacular.. Not to mention give all the experiments a high rate of collisions..

Wow... that would be cool...

But from the logs it looks like they were just doing beam dump studies... But you never know...

No doubt now, they could do 10x10. And ramp it..

Yes, as far as I remember we got to at least 8 (per beam). It may even have been higher. 16? Or was there only talk of 16?

They are apparently using lower per-bunch intensities to avoid damage in case of malfunction - total intensity was hardly three times of single bunch they are normally using.

I believe they were planning 16x16 collisions last year but they did not succeed to fill it. They were doing 4x4 fills regularly though.

Edit: correction, they actually succeeded to fill 16+16 bunches. Just found it on CMS page.

Yes I remember in chat counting those 16 steps as they did it...

Ok ok.....

But still its a cool pic anyway...
