Christmas Break Question

Post by mikeymac0811 » Fri Dec 11, 2009 11:03 pm

Hey All,
First off, Happy Hannukah to anyone who is celebrating this afternoon. With the holidays in mind, I read in one of the LHCB meeting minutes from this week that the machine will be shut off at 8am sharp on December 17th (for us on the East Coast of the US, that will be in the latenight hours Wednesday), what exactly goes on during the Christmas break? Does everyone get the time off?
Also, when would 3.5 TEV be beginning, would it begin right after the New Year or in the coming months after New Years?
Thanks for the answers and Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Happy Kwanzaa and Happy Festivus (to all Seinfeld fans

I would assume that people would stay to monitor the cryo system and other essentials, and that at least a certain number of people would be on call in case something goes wrong?

Will the 3.5 TeV collisions begin soon? Hopefully they'll take the slow and steady approach.

No, actually, in about 5 or 6 days (According to the CERN bulletin, December 16th for machine winding down) CERN will shutdown the LHC for Christmas vacation and supposedly return in January with no beam till February. I'd say expect 3.5 tev collisions (by my own estimation, not Gorlikian theory or any sort, lol) probably around Valentines Day.
