LS2 and looking ahead to Run 3

Post by dukwon » Mon May 07, 2018 2:17 pm

Plans for LS2:
Slides from https://indico.cern.ch/event/705545/att ... h_2018.pdf

Prospects for Run 3:
https://lhc-commissioning.web.cern.ch/l ... rmance.htm

Some points I want to highlight:
  • 7 TeV beams
  • 240b injections
  • Baseline of 65–70/fb per year for IP1/5
  • (not listed) 5 times more lumi at IP8
  • Luminosity ultimately limited by heat load
  • Expect several hours of levelling at IP1/5 per fill

Interesting; I thought the plan a few years back was to accumulate ~300\fb over run3, whereas now it seems to be little better than what's already possible ~150-200\fb

The figure of 300/fb was over Runs 1 to 3 (before the HL-LHC).

First night of LS2, violent thunderstorm caused extensive power cuts. The fire brigade had a busy night.
