This is not the Large Hadron Collider. It is the CMS experiment, which got a new pixel tracker. Describing it as first major upgrade is misleading. ATLAS inserted a new pixel layer during the last long stop, for example, and all the experiments replaced various smaller components during that time.

All the LHC dipoles (actually part of the accelerator) and various other components got upgrades during the last long stop.

I don't see the problem, LHC is the general term for the project (for the public) of which CMS is a part of. Sure, if you want to nitpick … I guess that's what you have to do to keep yourself busy when there is no longer anything to find.

If New York gets a new major, do you write "the US got a new president"?

And do you claim people would be nitpicking if someone corrects you?

That's a bad example, because a mayor and a president are different words, an upgrade can happen for both the accelerator and the detector. See it like this, if NY get's at new skyscraper, you could write "the US gets a new skyscraper".

You weren't 'correcting' anything rather being more specific.

Now you are nitpicking.
"US gets a new leader" if New York gets one.

Beter would be the US has a new senator, can be the senator of NY.

Sure now I'm nitpicking.

And that forum has a thread already. Posted nearly a week earlier than this thread in the wrong forum.

Yep, double-post, this one may be removed, my bad, I overlooked Draph's entry.
