2017 Operation

Post by jmc2000 » Thu Dec 01, 2016 10:46 pm

From the recent 128th LHCC Meeting:https://indico.cern.ch/event/580364/, page 27 from LHC Machine Status Report:
Naively applying 2016’s overall Hübner factor gives between 45 and 60 fb-1
Final configuration following discussion at Evian and Chamonix

that's a wrap. They ended the year with 58% time in stable beams, which is pretty amazing. They met or passed all the lumi goals as well. Here's to a 2017 run that is just as productive.

Summary Session of the LHC Performance Workshop 2017, March 1st:
https://indico.cern.ch/event/614870/

Aim is to record 45\fb, but going by previous years they'll probably go far further: 60\fb? ;)

Here is the schedule
Machine checkout starting April 26, commissioning with beam starting May 1. Scrubbing in early June if necessary, with first stable beams currently expected for June 12. Only 3 MD and TS blocks until the end of the year.

Beam should be back on Saturday or Sunday.

Ramp to 6.5 TeV last evening. Squeeze to 1 meter went smoothly.

The ULO (unidentified lying object) has moved a bit to the side, which means more space for the beam.

Next: squeeze to 40 cm.

Looks like they got all the optics corrections done down to 40cm.

From memory of the MD they did last year, the ATS (Achromatic Telescopic Squeeze) optics they're using now is much easier
to correct than the nominal optics. I don't have access to the morning meetings anymore so I can't see what beta-beating they achieved.

Commissioning is going well. Beam loss monitor latency checks, for machine protection and loss maps, have been done.
Setup of the Abort Gap Keeper (AGK) for the injection kickers at point 8. Injection kicker interlock tests done including checking the Abort Gap Keeper and Beam Energy Tracking System (BETS).
Injection kicker response in both transfer lines (TI2, TI8) measured.
Setup of the Transverse Damper (ADT) with probe bunches.
Finally commissioned the Ballistic optics after a second attempt. This type of optics is used to measure the optical effects of the triplet quadrupole magnets, on either side of ATLAS and CMS, by leaving them switched off and performing the usual measurement and correction.
As of this post OPs are setting up beam instrumentation and the RF cavities for operation with nominal bunches (1E11 protons).

We had first 13 TeV collisions already, with individual nominal bunches, without stable beams.

We might get first bunch trains tomorrow.

LHCb is starting night shifts on Saturday in anticipation of possible stable beams this weekend. I gather the other experiments have been doing night shifts for weeks already out of some sort of sense of masochism.

12b trains pushed back to maybe tomorrow. Tentative plan is 3x3 stable beams on Saturday night and a few nights next week. Intensity ramp might start the week after.
Has anyone heard if scrubbing will go ahead?

Not so much LHC activity during the night, easier to make various test runs there, and the big experiments have enough PhD students to run 24/7 during commissioning.

I didn't hear anything about scrubbing, but I would expect that it works similar to 2016. It is scheduled, but if it is not necessary they skip it.
