Rubber Duckies
Rubber Duckies
Saturday during all the dramatic events at the LHC I noticed something quite curious in the ATLAS control room via the live streaming video.
Sitting very prominently displayed by the Semiconductor Tracker group is a set of bright yellow rubber ducks.
I had to find out what that was about..
After a few emails...
Mom duck is named DAQ after the Data Acquisition System. The DAQ is a big thing in the SCT. Note similar sounding words DAQ and Duck.
The three little ducks are S C and T for the SCT..
This idea, shirt and mascot was the idea of a post-doc working on the SCT.
The SCT group has a super-duck for a mascot and is apparently making t-shirts with super-duck on it.
TOO much fun... I also love that they put the ducks out so prominently on display.
This brings up a whole thought of other mascots for other experiments.
I sure wish CERN could have a web store and sell stuff. But I understand that its a legal issue of some kind. They would love to have a store and know we would all love to buy stuff, but they cant do it. They have A-LOT of stuff like shirts, cups and all manner of stuff.

Re: Rubber Duckies
Atlas does mechandising.
http://www.atlas.ch/posters.html
CMS has posters.
https://cms.web.cern.ch/cms/Media/Publi ... index.html
I could only find one item on the CERN gift shop.

I guess that's why they don't have a website.

Re: Rubber Duckies
P.S. I shot cern a E-mail on this;

Hello,
This is probably not the right place for me to make this suggestion so if you could pass it along to the appropriate person I'd be grateful.
Many people around the world are very excited about the restart of the LHC. One would think there would be great demand for CERN merchandise as mementos or gifts, yet I find no central web merchandising outlet for CERN.
I know selling t-shirts is not CERN's mandate but I feel you may be missing out on public outreach opportunities not to mention make a few Francs to pay for the electricity .lol
So I suggest a CERN web merchandising presence to make all gift type items from the CERN gift shop and anything the other sub groups like CMS and ATLAS etc. may have available for purchase online at one easy to find location.
Thank you.

Re: Rubber Duckies
haha nice, thats a great idea why should we fear it, we should embrace it!
I'd personally like a shirt saying "Anyone that thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a twat" but i doubt cern would make me one lol.
still stranger things have happened...

Re: Rubber Duckies
I have already talked to key people about selling stuff. Its some law actually. CERN is a non=profit or something and because of this they cannot sell anything on the web. Period.
However.....
i was thinking someone else could. Maybe make a local arrangement with CERN, in a non profit sorta way, and then create a web store ? Someone local to CERN who could go buy things from them directly.
