Rolf Heuer - "We have a discovery"

CMS 4.9 Sigma at 125.9 +/- 0.6
ATLAS 5.0 Sigma at ~126.5

Yes! Congratulations to CERN , The CMS and ATLAS consortia.
I was too pessimistic in my estimates of their data taking efficiency thinking they would both be sub five sigma but I guess it was inevitable. Nice fake Steve Myers! ;)

So that's about 13fb-1 down and 2987fb-1 to go till 2030. What wonders will be revealed?

Call me crazy but in all fairness I am very disappointed - I still believe that the standard model is an abomination and I was really hoping for a "reset". That being said congrats to all involved, very nice job !

Well, its currently a "Higgs like" discovery. Maybe they might discover it does not fit the standard model Higgs. That would be fun.

what a wonderful early present 2012 has delivered. :D

i was struck by the fact that the diphoton channel showed an excess above SM expectations (3/2 sigma?), and it's been pointed out that the relative absence of a tau-tau signal may also portend that this not exactly the SM Higgs.
also some interesting points here
(and what's that excess at 90GEV?)

Even if they found the sm Higgs, then the standard model is not more than Newtons physics was about 150 years ago, they thought they knew everything and see how much more they found until now and Newtons physics is still not wrong and also not useless for most everyday use.
I guess SM will be the same: something usefull to answer many questions bus still not "all" or a final "theory of everything".
As far as I know even the Higgs-boson or the whole standardmodel doesnt explain the combination of quantumphysics and relativity.

Re: 5 sigma Higgs !!!. No - Its Higgs Boson (with a capital

Wonder if anyone out there in CERN has done a bit of reading in their school. The particle needs to be referred as Higgs-Boson and NOT Higgs boson.
The Boson comes from the renowed Indian physicist Satyendranath Bose, one who laid the foundation of quantum mechanics.
Dont understand why this scientific chaps of CERN, so called "scientists" are conveniently ignoring this fact?????

Higgs boson is a boson particle named after Peter Higgs, one of people who introduced the particle into Standard Model. It is a boson, it is not named after Mr. Bose.
Similarly there are W boson or Z boson, not W-Boson or Z-Boson.

Thats not correct!. boson is a particle that is with a "B" and not a "b". How else can you explain the nomenclature of "boson"? It was derived from the Bose-Einstein condensate theory.
The EU scientific community is deliberately playing a racist role in not mentioning this as a Boson. they want to credit "their own" Peter Higgs.
Shame on these so called scientists & media, bare-faced liars.

You Sir are being deeply unreasonable and provocative.
