If anyone knows more please fill us in.
CMS is apparently still recording events, even with its solenoid off:

Schedule Schmedule they're winging it I tell you!
The LHC is currently setting up for Proton - Lead Ion collisions.
Being just about a 1/2 fb-1 short of 15 fb-1 for 2012 I guess they want to try this again as they did in Nov 2011. http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/new ... collisions.
M'kay bring it on!

Looks like all the vistars have frozen about 19:51 CET (more than three hours ago now). Anyone know what's happened ?

I am just wondering why ALICE is still collecting proton-proton collisions. With the other experiments doing so well and collecting more data by many factors of ten, what does ALICE hope to see that the other experiments can't.

In previous years it made sense becuase they were using the collisons to calibrate their machine. The reason i am asking is becuase to me it would make more sense for ALICE to remain ofline until the PB-PB collisons start, as it would increase beam time for the other experiments.

Case and point beam was just dumed by an ALICE trip.

"Alice is also studying proton-proton collisions both as a comparison with lead-lead collisions and in physics areas where Alice is competitive with other LHC experiments"
http://aliweb.cern.ch/

It would be a waste to build such a large and expensive detector to run it just a few weeks a year.

Does any one have any more information on the "physics areas where Alice is competitive with other LHC experiments" in protron-proton physics.

Hi all,

I just wanted to post my congratulations to CERN and the LHC scientists for passing through the 20 fb-1 mark for 2012.
https://lhc-statistics.web.cern.ch/LHC-Statistics/#

Also just a note that there will be a Google Plus hangout tomorrow Nov 8, 2012 at 5 PM CEST, 11 AM EST, 8 AM PST You can post questions on Google Plus in the comments on the link below, or on Twitter to @CERN with the hashtag #askCERN.

It will be recorded and appear on you tube shortly after the event.

For interest, a video of the latest machine status report by Steve Myers at today's 112th LHCC:
