CMS Hangout this Friday night

Dear all,

Some of you might be aware of a video conference outreach event we are organising this Friday, using the Google+ platform. The event, while intended to be a small event, has quickly grown into something big in a short space of time (~1 week), thanks mainly due to enthusiasm and support from Google. I invite you to take a look at the plan for Friday:

------------------------

On 29th January, Barack Obama participated in a live discussion with Americans via a "Hangout" – a video conference that can be broadcast to the public – on Google+. The very successful event attracted 250,000 questions from the public, was viewed by hundreds of thousands of people, and received wide media coverage. Google is keen to treat the CMS Hangout this Friday night as the next big event!

What is it? CMS, in collaboration with Google, will organise a unique Hangout – a live video event connecting CMS scientists with schools and the public all over the world.

Where is it? Live from the CMS detector underground ("UXC") at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, in Cessy, France.

Who will participate? The event will be hosted by Albert De Roeck, and will have remote participants all around the world, including high-school students.

When is it? 10th February, between 17:00 and 18:00 CET (UTC +1).

Sounds great!!! :D
Anyone who doesn't take truth seriously in small matters cannot be trusted with large ones either by Albert Einstein.

From CERN:

Dear all,

Due to some concerns at Google and CMS (in particular relating to legal regulatory differences between USA and Europe), we have decided to conduct the event in two stages:

1) Friday, 10th: The first stage will be a pilot "Hangout" with just few selected participants (including six interested schools), hosted by Albert. There will be no accompanying public broadcast.

2) Next week (date TBD): The second stage will be a public "Hangout", broadcast to everyone, with publicity from Google.

Unfortunately it was not an on air hangout which has a live stream the public can view during the event. They did say in comments for the original post I linked to above that they were recording the event for later playback. They also said that they would likely do a real ON Air hangout at some later time. They (CMS) have also been doing a series of Classroom events with a scientist at the CMS control room and a classroom full of students in a more conventional tele-conference format. At any rate Kudos to CMS and +Achintya Rao who is doing outreach for CMS this year.
