Re: 2022 Operation

Well, show's over for this year, as of 6am.

40 /fb delivered to ATLAS and CMS (target was 25 /fb)

Availability was fairly poor following the ion test, although the definite low-light of the year was the 4 weeks lost due to the cooling plant problem at point 4.

Does that mean VELO wasn't in until now?
The first closure of the new VELO during beams was this morning. It reached 4 mm separation, so not completely closed.

Re: 2022 Operation

LHCb wanted to partially-insert the VELO (to 10 mm separation) today, but it was unable to fully recover from a power-cut at the data-centre.

Re: 2022 Operation

Looking to next year, if the energy crisis continues, YETS 2023-24 may begin at the end of October. In the longer term, we may see a general "optimisation" (reduction) in the physics programme. Expect more news after the Council next week.

Re: 2022 Operation

I'd expect there are detailed contingency plans for what can be de-energised and for how long and to what schedule, or even a short term sacrifice of some programs/facilities as an interim measure given the changing situation in europe. I haven't held back on details. The only info I can find are "...

Re: 2022 Operation

As people may have seen (oddly from the news media rather than directly from CERN), the energy crisis this winter may impact the accelerator complex on short time-scales if EDF requests it: https://www.wsj.com/articles/europes-energy-crunch-squeezes-worlds-largest-particle-collider-11662294416 More ...

Re: 2022 Operation

A few updates regarding the schedule.

The LHC should be ready for beam again on Tuesday 20th September

Due to the upcoming winter energy crisis, YETS is brought forward 2 weeks to Monday 28th November.

Whether or not we have a heavy-ion run this year is still TBD.

Re: 2022 Operation

This week is being used for access ("part 1 of TS1" if you like), next week will be some OP tests (apparently access not possible) and what remains of TS1 goes ahead as planned the following week. Expect return to operations on/after the 16th September

Re: 2022 Operation

Cooling plant at point 4 stopped last night, leading to failure in RF cryo. Three pressure release disks ruptured!

No beam for approximately 4 weeks

Re: 2022 Operation

the remaining runs appear to be geared towards confirming the Standard Model rather than discovering new physics as was hoped for You make it sound like we've stopped looking for new physics, which is absolutely not the case. Even "confirming the Standard Model" is itself a way of looking for new p...

Re: 2022 Operation

Well we had 2556b fills (with 144b trains) in Run 2. Certainly 240-bunch trains are much longer than before.

According to the Evian/Chamonix 2021 slides, the number of bunches may get up to 2748, depending on the heat load.

Re: 2022 Operation

Are we really behind schedule? It says 1200b on 4th August, and we were already at 1900b by then.

I heard that the trouble with RF on Friday night was almost enough for them to abandon the night shift, but it seems to have been fixed in the end, albeit continuing on 1900b instead of 2100b.

Re: 2022 Operation

It's the day of the media event! Here's the YouTube live stream link (starts 16:00 CERN time) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06kFq1QF5-s ... and we start the day off with 7 magnet quenches (6 dipoles and a quadrupole) :o First estimate for cryo recovery is 15:00. The plan was to have beams in "adju...
