Congratulations. Nice of you to tell us, when are you going to publish a paper ?

Re: has anyone heard the joke about the weasel and the colli

Given the press misreporting of science I suppose it's not surprising that they called it a weasel when in fact it was a marten.

Re: Will The LHC Be The End Of Experimental Particle Physics

Well you can make a respectable argument that the LHC makes no economic sense and that we should be spending the money on hospitals and the poor or something like that. But you can also make similar arguments about sport, arts, entertainment and such like. The fact is it is good for us as species to...

Re: this does have something to do with the LHC

TL;DR the TL;DR - It's a non-story. TL;DR - Security 'investigator' uncovers obscure security issue applicable to an unlikely scenario, manufacturer has already corrected the issue, CERN are very likely to have applied the update. I would imagine CERN already know and have already patched. Also they...

Clarke's Third Law: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

So for the majority of the population . . yes ;)

Re: Portal changes

WHY is there now, Aug 2015, no semi-real-time comment or commentary in this Forum on CERN operations ? Nothing from any knowledgeable insider on LHC Daily Meetings, cameras now hidden behind logins, nothing from the experiments, no occasional roving video, nothing for modestly knowledgeable outside...

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up

Thank you for the information, Tau. Can you explain something? If 25 ns bunch separation does not allow you to have more bunches, then what does it achieve? From where I'm sitting it seems likely that 25 ns will be harder, so I assume there is an up-side... It does allow more bunches but with less ...

Re: Dark Matter

I'm not quite sure I get your point, but the current theories suggest that dark matter interacts only through gravity.

Re: Heavy Ion Collisions safety

Well your comparison with smoking doesn't really work. In the early days no one really thought smoking was especially dangerous. Yes there were a few who thought ill of it - King James I for instance - "A custome lothsome to the eye, hatefull to the Nose, harmefull to the braine, dangerous to the Lu...

Dear DarkDaniel, dear people No bogus at all about the 1`148 TeV, LHCsafetyreviev is serious and so its papers. Please search 1.15 PeV, which is 1`150 TeV (more exactly is 1`148 TeV) here: https://cds.cern.ch/record/1129806/files/jinst8_08_s08001.pdf Usually, only the energy per nucleon is mentione...

Re: LHC as a mega-project!

This book - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Large-Hadron-Collider-Lyndon-Evans/dp/143980401X/ is awesome, although its rather expensive. It goes into a lot of detail about how the machine was built and how it works. It all predates that actual running of the machine but I found it an amazing read. Each chap...
