Re: Current Events Discussion
Apparently they had their first 3.5TeV collisions with high intensity bunches last night... Has anyone seen what luminosity it gave? EDIT: they're trying again right now! There's a 4e28 luminosity in CMS and Atlas, with only 1 bunch, which is 4 times higher than the first run on march 30th... Though...

Re: What Religious belief are you?
Of course, but my point was, I don't think Einstein would have spent 10 years on General Relativity if he did not think at the beginning he might be on the right way... If you spontaneously start on a basis that might very well be not true, and see what happens (eg. string theory), the point of view...

Re: Current Events Discussion
There's an awesome 1.7e29 luminosity in CMS (thats a 15kHz event rate)!! But they had again some problems establishing collisions in ATLAS, and the luminosity in the other experiments is a little behind... And apparently they lost ~5e10 protons in beam 2 during the squeeze... edit: 1.4e29 in ATLAS a...

Re: What Religious belief are you?
+1, science doesn't require faith... But scientists need to be somehow confident (not too much though) in their results if they want to move on!

Re: What Religious belief are you?
I'm in a bit of a hurry these days (examinations soon), so I'll simply give you this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near-death_studies You'll find plenty of papers in the links and references; plus you can simply type "near death studies" in ask.com (as we all should avoid using google ^^).... T...

Of course ^^ (I'm a French-speaking Belgian, it's not better here...) It always baffles me how badly some scientists speak English, although they use it almost everyday... Honestly, I am surprised how many english people speak bad english ... no wonder non-english scientists do too. You could certa...

^^ And I can affirm French people are not the best for foreign languages... It's not the first time they use strange English on the vistars!
I saw somwhere they could run stable beams with 12 bunches after today's physics fill. Would that mean another 100% increase in luminosity?

Re: What Religious belief are you?
I see some chance in genetic engineering, maybe some time we'll really understand what's going on in our bodies and will be able to supply some evolution here ourselves. Surprisingly though, religions are often strongly against this, too. So it's not only about slowing down our evolution but also a...

Re: What Religious belief are you?
@chriwi: evolution doesn't produce "better" species, it produces species that are better adapted to the environment... Thus, the most "evolved" species are bacteriae... And I think what we humans regard as the most "evolved", i.e. humans, is rather the most biologically "complex"... @Kasuha: The hum...

Re: What Religious belief are you?
Yes I didn't read correctly... I'd like to say, so many people, some much more skilled than us in science, philosophy, sociology, etc., have discussed this subject before! Even if we can't reach a conclusion here, it's very interesting to be able to talk about it without getting angry and to hear ab...

Re: What Religious belief are you?
That's because Newton's and Einstein's theories are not equivalent... Firstly, Einstein gave an explanation for the gravitational mechanism, whereas Newton "only" described the way body attract each other. Secondly, Einstein' theory resolves some problems with Newton's theory that had been known lon...

Re: CMS event display
It's quite sad CMS doesn't give more information... Its twitter page and the e-commentary haven't been updated for more than a month! LHCb and Atlas have announced many particle re-discoveries, and CMS does only talk about them in a hard to find presentation...
