Re: Creating "Sparks"
In fact, physicists are all eagerly waiting if LHC will find either something expected (Higgs) or something totally unexpected (new physics). But I really don't see a reason to fear that it might be dangerous. Between nothing and a Monstrous-Earth-Eating-Superparticle-Which-Nobody-Has-Ever-Seen-Befo...

Re: 3.5 TeV accelleration ! WORLD RECORD !
Im getting confused now. Have the beams collided somewhere in the machine or not? Some people say they have some say they have not. Beams did not collide with each other yet. There were no beam collisions in any of the experiments. But they were accelerated to 3.5 TeV and then dumped, so all of the...

Re: Creating "Sparks"
Whatever it is, if it's so fragile what makes you think it could be dangerous? Anyway ... cosmic ray particles don't just collide with earth or celestial bodies, they also collide with each other at any angles. If anything fragile, stable and dangerous could be created that way, it would have been c...

Re: 3.5 TeV accelleration ! WORLD RECORD !
Oops ~ my bad. It's even better than I thought then, dump is producing two times better collisions than experiments had in december.Danny252 wrote:Each beam is 3.5 TeV, so total collision would be 7 TeV (with half being 3.5, not 1.75) - full power is 7 TeV and 14 TeV respectively.
Chirality
Recently I am trying to learn more about particle physics and there is still something I don't understand and would like to know. Weak interaction acts exclusively on left-handed particles, that's something I can understand. Left-handed particles differ from right-handed ones in their chirality whic...

Re: 3.5 TeV accelleration ! WORLD RECORD !
They plan first collisions for 30th press conference or whatever are they planning to hold that day. Technically speaking, half-energy (1.75 TeV) collisions are already happening (with residual particles in beam pipe, with beam pipe itself and in dump), yet another world record. It just doesn't happ...

I'm serious about it. Or do you have a proof it will not happen?Stephen wrote:It is not funny.Kasuha wrote: God loves us all so if anything dangerous happens he will pop up and stop it.

Re: Creating "Sparks"
In my opinion the one big question not answered to mysattisfaction in any saftyreport isthe following: Its consence that cosmic rays hitting a stationary target leave debree with a high velocety also called high impulse compared to thesurroundiong matter. Its also consence that the headoncollission...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.
I don't even belive that they really try to avoid collisiions, they also did not do this las december. Last december there was no 'grand opening' planned. Collissions are only not very likely while thay work with only a few bunches which are not intentionally syncroniced for collission. That's the ...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.
At the regions of collisions, probably, the rays were on skew lines (two lines that do not intersect but are not parallel). I doubt they'd alter orbit to avoid collisions, they'd need to redo it all for collision course then. There's easier way to avoid collisions, yet it's still shame they must po...

Re: Creating "Sparks"
Don't try to make it sound like careless behavior should be encouraged. Before scientists tested the first atom bomb, there was a fear that it could potentially burn the entire atmosphere. They ignored the safety concerns and took the risk anyway. It was a completely irresponsible thing to do. Even...

Re: Creating "Sparks"
I strongly disagree. If there is minor risk of the world ending by a certain scientific experiment, it must be stopped. Just because you think it is worth the risk, doesn't mean that you can decide it for the rest of the world and put the entire planet on the line. However, there is evidence to sug...

Re: Infinite series in quantum phyics
BUT you don't need such a bignum to do that calculation. The first stone has 128 slots to choose from, the second has only 127, and there are 2 ways if choosing which is the first stone. 128*127/2 = 8128. Perhaps you mistake the formula n!/r!*(n-r)! for the underlying reality of what is going on? N...
