And this; http://features.csmonitor.com/globalnew ... e-mystery/ finally explains why the small spiral is blue, sunlight scattering off tiny saphires.

Giant Hexagon on Saturn

Very strange natural (? !) phenomenon. the jet stream on saturn is not round but a hexagon.

http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/ ... n-hexagon/

I eagerly await the explanation!

I like the Z-pinch Project at Sandia National Labs. http://zpinch.sandia.gov/

Interesting blend between national security, pure physics and fusion power research.

Check the arcs and sparks http://zpinch.sandia.gov/Z/Images/z.jpg

Re: the sun

Well ... as R. Regan used to say... It's a Sun not a planet. A star if you will Wiki describes it well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun Surface temp 5,510 °C, you'd be a puff of smoke in an instant, Surface gravity 27.94 g you'd be crushed as well if there was a solid surface to crush your smoke upo...

Re: antimatter detected in lightning

Yeah that is neat. I guess the super lightning bolts act as a linac and anti particle are found in the debris of the resulting high energy collisions. I believe this is related.

Re: My Setup - Arms Race !!

This is my Starship LHC screen.
http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0Aeold ... Nmcy&hl=en
I'd like to save the setup so I don't have to rebuild it every time. Any thoughts?

Re: Can black holes grow?

I don't have the theoretical chops to compose a meaningful answer so I leave it up to the experts, like this guy. http://motls.blogspot.com/2009/01/lhc-b ... conds.html
Or if you prefer a video ... http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1120625

Re: *** 2.36TeV collisions ***

The beam lines for the two beams always intersect at the 4 points where experiments are located. The CCC makes collisions happen when they adjust the RF system to get the beam bunches to be at the IP at the same. There are more systems that have not yet been brought online to compress the bunches so...

Re: BIG forum change & Wikipedia - help

Did you mean start an LHC Portal Wiki or link into wikipedia? If the former look at this, http://www.wikihow.com/Start-a-Wiki And even Wikipedia has some info. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki I kinda think it's duplicating efforts to copy the info here from cern or wherever, maybe just continuing ...
