HAHAHA! Good for you, Ivan! I like that!
And the mushrooms in my garden prove there are leprechauns living there.

The machine that solves the problem

Dear Ivan, I have the solution to all your problems. The Psionic Hieronymous Machine™ http://www.lifetechnology.org/hieronymus.htm will allow you to switch off the LHC from a distance, and the theory behind it, based on quantum mechanics, looks compatible with your theories. Could you please test it...

Re: SBU Professor, Puts “Doomsday” Scenarios in Perspective

During the session, Crease, who has documented many years of Brookhaven’s history, explained that science-based doomsday scenarios existed long before the LHC and that these predictions often reflect upon people’s fears and anxieties of the time. Too bad we know this won't stop MagneticTrap from tr...

This may be way too detailed, but basically it says: "You're right, it is like an old CRT".

Re: Why is beta 11 m? The explanation!

The whole story on the beta is in this document: https://espace.cern.ch/be-dep/Lists/AXEL%20Courses/Attachments/75/L03_Transverse_Optics_2.pdf On page 12, there is an ellipse graph that shows exactly what beta is: the width of the ellipse divided by the height. After a bit of calculation, I came to ...

Why is beta 11 m? The explanation!

Thanks to interesting discussions with photino  I managed to get a way to explain what beta and "squeezing" is all about, without using formulas. The short version: if beta is low, the beam is narrower, "squeezed". If beta is high, the beam is wide and straight. Beta is the distance from the f...

Hump measurements, march 4: some computations

The sharp peaks with diamonds are the "tunes": they are supposed to be there. It is the "vague" hump that are the problem. The needles with a spacing of about .01 are actually result of the quadrupoles: you can ignore these. (For physicisists: there are about 100 FODO cells in the LHC). The hump res...

Re: The Hump

The "right" hump is actually supposed to be there, it is the "tune", that you can recognise from the diamonds. The left one is the real hump.

Re: The Hump

I recommend to read this from the forum: http://www.lhcportal.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=219 There PCatom explains what tuning is. You can see a tuning graph with hump on page 10 of http://indico.cern.ch/getFile.py/access?contribId=1&resId=1&materialId=slides&confId=85751 The tuning graph (someti...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

Here you can clearly see the difference between a scientist and a crackpot.
If you ask a scientist questions, you get answers, and (s)he'll keep explaining until you understand.
If you ask a crackpot questions, you get nonsense, and (s)he'll keep blabbering until you believe.

Re: Quark-Gluon Plasma - QGP

You're right. A magnetic field consists of field line loops. Normally, this loop is caused by a magnet, that contains part of the loop. But a moving charge in space with leave "floating" loops around its trajectory. So in the above mentioned plasma each moving charge will make those loops, and the l...

Re: ** Current Events and discussion **

There was a minor event wednesday, where the new Quench Protection System (nQPS) was a bit too quick deciding to quickly stop 50 magnets by heating them. The results were so drastic that you can even see in on the temp graph of S78 http://hcc.web.cern.ch/HCC/cryo_main/cryo_main.php?region=Sector78&s...
