Re: False Vacuum
Particles in LHC are way less energetic than many other particles in the universe. The only difference is that in LHC scientists are watching the outcome with sophisticated equipment. (...) And exactly this difference is important. Since quantum theory, we know that observation makes a difference t...

Re: LHC Shutdown schedule
Well the whole LHC seems to be warming up I think most likely because they've turned the power off to the cryogenics. Oh yes, now I see, but that wasn't the case a few hours ago, then I saw only the mentioned "groups" and LSSs going up. I thougt they would keep the cryo for the others. I wonder wha...

Re: LHC Shutdown schedule
I'm not convinced the temperature readings were incorrect. The warmer magnets seem to be the LSS magnets which stands for Long Straight Section so I guess these are less important. All the LSS temperatures in operational state have been between 4-6K, as far as I remeber. Now some of them are rising...

Re: LHC Shutdown schedule
Well I guess this http://hcc.web.cern.ch/hcc/file/cmm.png answers my earlier question about Cryo maintain over xmas. Take a look at http://lhc.web.cern.ch/lhc/Cooldown_status.htm . It seems that they let most of the LSS-magnets warmup, for some reason. Some of the Arc-magnets going up too, it looks...

Re: Daily Schedules and Hiccups
They were running nice this afternoon with a 4 bunch at 1.18 TeV beam and another power converter tripped. This seems to be happening a lot. One log mentioned that they had already switched to the second card on that pc. I would love to hear the technical 'discussions' going on about pc reliability...

Re: ** current events and discussion **
I'm curious about the cryo conditions in sector 78. As I've been following along for the past month or so, authorization is usually lifted when the average temperature exceeds about 1.94 or so. The Arch magnets in 78 have been running 1.98 - 1.99 over the last few days but authorization has remaine...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.
Ivan, you didn't answer my question - You thought the blue spiral in Norway was a magnetic hole but it turned out you were wrong. It was hypothesis. I did not say about my value of confidence in that. And more, I thought that it was a trick made by anti CERN people. So you thought it was a trick bu...

Awesome video, that one in the tunnel  Go Cernettes! Where can I buy records? And when is the next worldtour planned? You can buy a CD (21$) with an additional video clip: http://musiclub.web.cern.ch/MusiClub/bands/cernettes/ Just click on CD, if you scroll down there are some links to downloa...

Wow, a knight avatar...
I think the knights were very smart people, they invented the linear collider
and even made a lot of self-experimentation with it
Joerg.

Re: basic accelerator theory from a great discussion in chat
So from an engineers POV the LHC is a very complex control loop with lots of non-independent tuning parameters and lots of disturbances. Now I have an idea why there was LHC@Home to simulate the behavior of the beams. I wonder if they have to find new settings after the break, small hysteretic effec...

Re: a couple of questions
(...) Finally, where can I get a LHC blueprint so I can build one of my own?.......just kidding about the blueprint :D Why kidding? There are a lot of blueprints on the web, not only at CERN sites. Here is an example from a local university: http://www1b.physik.rwth-aachen.de/~cms/Tracker/Modules/ ...

Interesting blog posts
I saw two posts on the uslhc-blog which may explain a bit how they search for new particles. One explains in a relative easy way how they try to find the Higgs: http://blogs.uslhc.us/?p=3394 The other one is about Feynman diagrams (despite there is none in it AFAIK). It is a lot more detailed and wi...

A very warm welcome to you Josch :) Real nice welcome post :) Hope you have fun here and come into the chatroom too :D Emmylou :ugeek: Thanks a lot for the warm welcome! I think I will not use the chatroom, I'm simply too slow to chat in english ;-) And I know I would spend hours there but have a l...

Re: Hello to all
Welcome! That's a cool project! Sponsoring a solar cell... yay! *starts counting money* Yes, and like the LHC the team consists of experts from all over the world. You need really good professionals to build a plane with the wingspan of an Airbus and the weight of a car. And a lot of money. But the...
