Re: Schedule

Basically, one is like smashing rocks really fast, and the other more like sending 2 bits of lit TNT at eachother really fast. Of course, both have their uses! Proton-Proton is like smashing 2 rocks together REALLY hard - and then when they break apart from the impact, we can see what they contain (...

Re: Creating "Sparks"

Maybe I can try and answer a few: -- Gamma rays are just (high energy) photons. To the best of my knowledge, you're not going to affect a photon with a magnetic field - magnetic fields only affect charged particles and other magnets. Alpha particles (Helium ions with no electrons) would be deflected...

Re: What does ... mean?

May as well list what I do know, to help start it off. Not alphabetical, it came out of my head like this! Beam: What's being circulated in the LHC or attached accelerators at high speeds (nearly the speed of light) and (relatively) high energy. This can be protons, ions or possibly something more e...

Re: Overnight Problems?

I'll go hunting for that group right now, and thanks for the info (as well as... everything here, I guess!)

Re: What do the displays mean ?

And yet, even with no beams running (as of right now, apparently), dots and bars are everywhere...

I'm sure it makes sense to the boffins!

Re: What do the displays mean ?

I think the colour of the image shows the [atom?] density over a cross-section of the LHC - blue being empty, red being "stuff here". Hence why you get red dots appear when a beam is supposedly running - I think the red bars that appear are actually part of the machinery being picked up for some rea...

What does ... mean?

Obviously, CERN has plenty of terms and acronyms that the majority of us don't understand. So, we may as well have somewhere to ask about what certain things mean.

First off, what does "quiet beam" mean? Simply running a beam without doing anything to it (collisions, adjusting stuff, etc.)?

Overnight Problems?

Earlier Page 1 was talking about cryo problems, and a few of the logbooks mention cryo problems and a "difficult recovery overnight". Looking at the magnet temperatures, there is a new spike (there's been one quite high for a while now). Did something interesting happen?

Re: What do the displays mean ?

Having looked at "Page 1", some googling reveals that: TI2 and TI8 are transfers from the SPS to the LHC. The SPS is the final acceleration stage for whatever Cern are throwing in that day. TI2 points clockwise and feeds Beam 1, TI8 anticlockwise feeding Beam 2. These seem to join the LHC at positio...
