It's the twenty-tens for the next three years then it's the twenty-teens.

Re: CERN selects cloud computing partner
I was hoping it would be Google. They are doing amazing things with their in house designed server container data centre systems. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRwPSFpLX8I And the brilliant idea of using motherboards that only need a single 12V supply so that each one has a gel cell battery to act ...

Re: LHC Shutdown schedule
CERN has installed Helium storage tanks that can hold a fraction of the total amount in the LHC system. So I would assume that is a major factor in managing energy hence most sectors will stay at 4.5 K and act as helium storage. I have been looking for a log note or any other info on the Xmas break ...

Re: Daily Schedules and Hiccups
Re: the PC trips of Tuesday I found an interesting entry in the AB-OP Elog LHC PO HC page at tues 15 Dec 23:02 abut the trip being caused by an unexpected large value short duration input from the real time feedback system. So it sounds like it's some thing they will sort out and not defective hardw...

Re: LHC Shutdown schedule
I'm going to guess that they will allow sectors with no work scheduled to warm to 4.5 k so they can turn off the 1.8 k compressors, some sectors warm to 70 k for testing and some to warm right up if they need work. I hope it's not many because it will take at least 3 wks to cool down again. You can ...

Here is a good item on Luminosity and cross section.

Hopefully not a double post as I tried earlier and it never came up on the board.

Re: LHC Shutdown schedule
Has anyone seen any mention of if they will keep the magnets at 1.9 deg K or let them warm up some to save cooling electricity?

Re: Daily Schedules and Hiccups
They were running nice this afternoon with a 4 bunch at 1.18 TeV beam and another power converter tripped. This seems to be happening a lot. One log mentioned that they had already switched to the second card on that pc. I would love to hear the technical 'discussions' going on about pc reliability ...

Re: basic accelerator theory from a great discussion in chat
Very Educational. In the link that PCATOM left https://espace.cern.ch/be-dep/Lists/AXEL%20Courses/AXEL2009.aspx there are .PPT slides of the lectures in the "Introduction to Accelerator Physics" series (at the bottom) basically what he said in chat but expanded with pictures. The Machine courses are...

Aw They Broke Page one again It's saying 22:59 and it really 01:04 now.
Elog messages say they tried to restart it no joy.

Do they use a check list when restarting the injections?
I 've been following along this afternoon and twice now they had the wrong settings for injection. First had the RF freq at 1.18 TeV setting not 450GeV injection freq. Then had the beam tune feedback set wrong. I guess if all you is loose a little time then no big deal but this sound like the sort o...
