Re: Proton vs Graphite
Treating the situation classically (i.e. ignoring relativity for now) Take a 3.5TeV moving particle (A) and stationary particle (B) (One of the nuclei in the absorber) The momentum of A is non zero and the momentum of B is zero, so the total momentum is non-zero, and has the same direction as A. Whe...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.
This explanation fails here: 1. Explain why an excited vacuum region will be created in a proton proton collision? Excited vacuum region can be created between curved trajectories of protons in the place of nearest distance. [Image] Under pB=mc^2, vacuum transforms from antiferromagnetic state into ...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.
I think that these "crystals" from the Dirac sea are particles of antimatter, something that is well understood, both in theory and experimentally. I wouldn't put it past Ivan to have pulled yet more homespun terminology out of his rectal passageway however.

A magnetic field has a direction (North to South), so opposite and parallel would be a line running the opposite way (South -> North)

Re: The Computer Science Thread
CS is certainly an interest of mine, even if it's not what I study (I study physics)
Mostly my CS interests lie in networks, cryptography and poking bits of code to see what happens. From an IT point of view, I make nearly equal use of Windows and Linux machines.

I think it would be a toss up between Baba O'Reily by The Who, and Highway to Hell by AC-DC

1. You mean this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice-nine I believe the paper means this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_IX 2. Why do you think this material will be created at the LHC? 3. What is the connection between Ice-nine and your theory of magnetic holes? 4. Why do you mention strangelets, ...

Re: Open letter to MagneticTrap
As I understand it, when we have probed protons, neutrons etc with enough force to seperate the quarks under a simple model of their behaviour (i.e ignoring the confinement model), they haven't seperated. Probing them with energy greater than 2M_quark can lead to production of quark/antiquark pair t...

Scrodingers Kittens is well worth reading IMO
I haven't read In search of Schrodingers Cat, but I imagine that it is also well written.

Re: LHC as detector of relict neutrinos?
The fact that neutrinos have such low energy means you need huge amounts of observed matter to have a reasonable chance of observing the desired interaction. The amount of matter in the LHC is comparatively small, so the chances of the neutrino interacting anywhere is low. Couple that with the high ...
