Re: 5% loss on rampup?

No that shouldn't be happening but their primary objective is delivering luminosity so whatever doesn't completely stop them from that will get polished on the fly.

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

Personally I believe the EU is a positive force that does more good than harm, clearly you believe the opposite. I doubt we'll persuade each other. We can agree on that. I wasn't willing to discuss the matter, I was only giving an illustration why I can understand such feelings. Cucumbers are the f...

They are doing things that never have been done before by humans.

The universe knows worse. Way, way worse. And nothing of it seems to be tearing it apart.

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

That's fairly typical of the misinformation and myth that spreads about the EU. Quote from the EU - "Cucumbers do not have to be straight. There are grading rules, which were called for by representatives from the industry to enable buyers in one country to know what quality and quantity they would...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

i meant the "prisoner part" While I don't sympathesize with his fears, I can understand this part. Living in EU where all sorts of regulations and rules - often rather ridiculous - are taking place in a way which I cannot affect gives me rather similar feeling. An example - there's a rule for how m...

Re: Protons and Special Relativity

The idea of proton consisting of quarks connected by springs is about as realistic as the classic planetary model of atom. It just does not work that way. I believe the effect may be rather related to relativistic aberration. There's a video on youtube where you can see aberration (and other effects...

Re: Protons and Special Relativity

With added energy, the proton cross-section for various rare interaction increases. Even the Totem experiment reports increase in proton elastic collision diameter . This does not mean its physical dimensions are changing - in fact it is very tricky to consider anything like physical dimensions for ...

Re: What's the rf cavity phasing for?

RF cavities are oscillation chambers taking care of accelerating the beam and keeping the beam in bunches. Their oscillation frequency corresponds with spacing between beam buckets - imaginary places where a bunch can be stored (normally only small part of about 32000 buckets is filled with protons)...

Has anyone seen/heard anything about MOEDAL recently?
They don't seem to have any recent publications but they still look alive.

Finally some technical details about what went wrong in OPERA: http://profmattstrassler.com/articles-and-posts/particle-physics-basics/neutrinos/neutrinos-faster-than-light/opera-what-went-wrong/ What I find the most amusing is that their superior consistency between long pulse and short pulse measu...

Announcements...?

I thing we've got some announcement misuse on this forum. The thing is, a post made in a thread marked as 'announcement' highlights the section in which it was created and this highlight does not disappear if I access the thread from another section. Sometimes I can't even find which thread is causi...

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

They're working in a new space, higher energy and higher squeeze, so it takes some attempts to sort things out. But they don't seem to see it as a problem, it's not even mentioned in the 'to be sorted out' list on the progress meeting.

That's very nice result. I hope OPERA will confirm it during the May campaign.
