Re: Neutrinos go faster then light !

They don't even know the amplitude of the error yet. http://www.quantumdiaries.org/2012/02/23/new-information-on-ftl-neutrinos/ I just wonder how does it go together with the fact that they used portable atomic clock to calibrate both ends and found no more than 2 ns difference. I'm definitely looki...

Re: Can black holes grow?

despite any unproven theory on the subject and considering that it has been confirmed by measurement in mature galaxies that the mass of a central super massive black hole equals one half of one percent of the mass of the surrounding galaxy, if black holes grow, wouldn't we, shouldn't we observe in...

Pantomas is a spammer copy-pasting a post from one forum to another. The original post is from 2003, source is here: http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=9141 (already linked on this page)

Re: Too many spam-bots

They're not bots, they're usually real people employed to make such posts on all kinds of forums. And if you prevent them having a link in the signature they'll find another way - put the link to the text, to their profile, as a link, as plain text, picture, anything. The only thing that works again...

Re: Smashing anti protons

It would create basically the same as protons. It's the particle energy what gets transformed to the matter of additional particles and it generates even amounts of particles and anti-particles. Standard model Higgs is its own antiparticle, similarly to photons. But there are also string theory Higg...

Re: Mini Black Holes

What I find weird is how can you say something that's so clearly not true and try to start a dispute over it.

Re: Mini Black Holes

In nowaday's universe, it takes a mass of a rather large star to form a black hole by the mass falling on itself once it has cooled enough. But smaller black holes can theoretically form if you find a way how to compress their mass under the necessary limit. And there comes the controversy as some s...

Re: Question for the smart people.

Nobody has decided about Big Bang and nobody knows for sure how it had all really started. Main assumption here is that laws of physics as we observe them today didn't change in the past. Another thing is that we don't even know all the details of laws of physics. Such things like neutrino fine stru...

Re: Neutrinos go faster then light !

Space distortion by gravity is actually making the path longer. And in case of Earth's gravity the difference is unmeasurably small.

Re: Neutrinos go faster then light !

I've seen this quite a long ago so I'm surprised it's placed as something new (maybe they were refining the paper too?) but I don't think it can be used as a proof for non-superluminal neutrinos. The reasoning goes: We have theory T which explains superluminal neutrinos but according to T such neutr...

Re: Neutrinos go faster then light !

One point to consider is that this issue *isn't* primarily what the OPERA experiment was set up to do. They are doing lots of stuff in terms of examing the properties of neutrinos, this measurement was a complete surprise to them and wasn't really what they were looking for. So hence if it turns ou...

Re: Neutrinos go faster then light !

In general, either neutrinos will be indeed found to be faster than light, or they will find a measurement error. So the paper will be either a great discovery or a great shame. It's a lottery for these people and their will to sign it is proportional to their belief how much of either will it be.

Re: Neutrinos go faster then light !

I find these results very exciting. Particularly the spread of measured delays gives me another idea. In the article, an 8 km long lightguide is mentioned. I wonder how much it changes its length when temperature changes? Is it perhaps possible that during the measurement campaign its length was mea...

Re: A bit of global warming

You're wrong on so many levels. Respect for all life forms - so I should respect tuberculosis or AIDS virus? Measles? What about life forms created by genetic engineering? Or is it again humans who decides which life form is worth respect and which is not? Who are you to decide what is and what is n...

Re: A bit of global warming

There's no universal law specifying how should Nature look like. And Nature does not care about what do we do. Being 'eco-friendly' means affecting Nature in a way we, humans, like or prefer for some reason. And in most cases this reason is that we believe it's the right thing to do because somebody...
