It is not even on the list yet. Who feels like adding it?

Re: MUFO?

The MUFO stands for "Mega Unknown Falling Object", which is probably some dust falling down the tube, that gets hit by the high energy photons resulting in a spray of particles that set off the detectors. The ULO is something lying in the tube, which might be a heap of dust of a few mm high. The big...

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up

And yesterday we had collisions with a beta of 80 cm. The beta is a measurement for the focus of the beam. If they say "we are at 80 cm", they mean "the beta is 80 cm at the collision points". The lower it is, the more focusued the beams are. Previous run the lowest possible value was 80 cm, but sin...

The first 13 TeV collisions are a fact

As I type this, it is happening! The first 13 TeV collisions are happening right now, in ATLAS and CMS. Edited: now in all four IPs. Now the experiments have some test data to adjust their machines. But there is still plenty to do before the real production run: Beams are not yet stable The movable ...

Link found: lots of info about LHC

Hi folks,
I stumbled on a great website that tell everything about the LHC you want to know (and more, unless you are as crazy as I am!):
http://www.lhc-closer.es/

Take a look.
I think we must thank the author(s) for collecting all this stuff nicely together!

Re: Fascinating Facts about the LHC

My personal favorite facts: The tube is 26659.883 m long. But, this differs about 1 mm with the phase of the moon. And that is enough to compensate for, as stated before. The driver frequency of the RF is 400.789 MHz. When ramping from injection energy to the 3.5 TeV, this has to be increased by onl...

Re: Possible LHC convention!!!!

How about a an internet convention? That way, the many people who can't afford (timewise, moneywise or otherwise) to go can join in. I was thinking of one or more IRC sessions/video chats with interesting people. And indeed, we already knowt the LHC is important, otherwise we wouldn't be here... But...

Agreed.
However, I *still* am allergic to nonsense, and sometimes I fail to hide it. :-)

At the moment there no direct explanation of «Earth black holes» in Guatemala, China, Ukraine, Russia et al. Oh yes there is: http://www.inspectapedia.com/vision/sinkholes.htm http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/sinkholes/10637/what_causes_a_sinkhole_/554362 http://www.travelpo...

LHC calculator

How hard can it be to make a website that allows you to input all kinds of parameters and then says: "the probability that the LHC will destroy the earth under these circumstances is zero"?
