Re: Why is beta 11 m? The explanation!
Tau you are confirmed!! This is from the CERN bulletin. What is a β*? β* describes the beam size at the interaction point. More mathematically, it is a measure of the distance from the interaction point at which the beam is twice the size of that at the interaction point. The lower the beta, the sma...

Introducing LSIS- The LHC status information service
Do u remember the text-to-speech system in the CERN control center?? Sadly we cant have that. BUT it inspired me write a simmilar programm. LSIS - The LHC status information service LSIS gives a voice notification when any of the status changes defined in the configuration file are observed. This en...

Re: Current Events Discussion
This one: http://lhc-webcast.web.cern.ch/lhc-webcast/ is way easier to understand.
It was launched for the 3.5 TeV event and is still active...

Re: Actual progress of the LHC-physics-programm
CERN has just launched an "LHC Physics Center" at http://lpcc.web.cern.ch/LPCC/events/. There is not much there yet, but we can hope for a lot of inside in the future.

Re: A day at the LHC (movie)
I just set up a machine to record LHC activity (LHC1, event displays) 24/7. If u want another summary movie of a milestone just write me a short PM.

Re: A day at the LHC (movie)
Thx Xymox. I will soon get a fanless PC and will then record CERN activity 24/7. In the meantime a simple script that saves the Vistar every couple of seconds is all u need to make s.th. like this yourself.

Re: Loss of Energy
The energy loss per particle per turn in the machine is given by: http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/8/b/7/8b734d938b0806dfcabe99867a3875de.png As one can easily see the loss in energy is strongly related not only to the energy but also to the mass of the particle. The lighter the particle the more en...

A day at the LHC (movie)
Ever wondered what a day at the LHC would look like when compressed into 4 minutes?? I did and created this: http://home.halifax.rwth-aachen.de/~mrongen/movie.html I hope u like it. PS: I have just started programming a software that gives voice alerts similar to those in the video. Stay tuned for m...

Van der Meer scans are a way of measuring the luminosity. Read all about luminosity and methods of measuring it at: http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/261063/files/p117.pdf

Re: Let's go hump hunting!
The LHC has a minimum distance of 3km to Lake Geneva (see Google Earth).mrgumby wrote:The LHC passes under Lake Geneva.......?????
Yesterdays log suggested that the hump might be related to betatron cleaning.
Re: Music
A first try: http://home.halifax.rwth-aachen.de/~mrongen/music.html EDIT: It should play as background music. The original file is here: http://home.halifax.rwth-aachen.de/~mrongen/RGB_Music.mid EDIT2: I have changed it to a mp3 file so that everyone can open it. But this might it slightly bigger 20...

Re: Serious Crackpottery
I don't see how your model can group quarks into neutrons and protons in heavier nuclei. But this is necessary in order to explain the strong force (and in turn radioactivity).Chelle wrote:But if I may say, for the mechanism of a nucleus with electrons on the outside it might pass the test, any suggestions ...

Re: Serious Crackpottery
It is thought of as a center piece, with electrons flying around it but I believe it might be alternatively like a "Mixer" and in that case the quarks would be strings of particles like the rotors (beaters), and the electrons would be spinning inside and the whole would form a bowl like is seen on ...
