Re: Remember the facts
(besides 50Hz ;-) The truth is, there is not 50 Hz in the mains, the frequency is slightly changing throughout the day. See here for instance. But I don't see how these slight changes might cause the hump, the interference by far cannot go to 3.5 kHz IMO. Of course you can't keep exactly 50Hz, ever...

Re: Let's go hump hunting!
if looking for a mechanical vibration in the tunnel, would they be better to bolt some geo-phones to the walls/floor ? Dave It depends: If you are sure it is coupled through the floor then yes. But it may be something that is generated in the magnets itself, for example in pipes vibration can occur...

Re: Remember the facts
Although I think we mustn't immediately reject strange proposals, I find it unlikely that the ELF or LF has the behaviour of the hump: 2.6 to 3.7 kHz, slowly sweeping in frequency between the two in a time of 7 to 10 minutes. Also, I find it hard to believe the source would come from so far away, b...

Re: Let's go hump hunting!
I searched the net because I knew there are people who are observing ELF and LF. I'm pretty sure that there is already data, at least at the military but it would be a little bit difficult to get it. I did not found any public research institution or the like yet, but this may be helpful: http://lwc...

Re: Let's go hump hunting!
Hi, have they considered ELF efects (Shumann resonances http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schumann_resonances , U-Boat comm.) or LF sources (and all their possible mixing products)? Maybe it helps to place some sensitive measurement equipment some km away from all the noise generated by CERN itself and l...

Collisions tonight? Maybe at 3.5TeV? https://lhc-commissioning.web.cern.ch/lhc-commissioning/news-2010/presentations/week13/Beam_commissioning_20100329_1700.pdf It says on the last Page: • 02:00 -03:00: Back at 450 GeV–Colliding bunch pattern Single_2b_1_1_1 with B1 (1, 17851), B2 (1, 8911)-Checking...

Comments 28-03-2010 05:31:38 : We are stuck with ALICE, no way to contact the ALICE ControlRoom. We don't have yet the injection permit because of ALICE. Physics coordinator contacted to unblock the situation. That was only the last comment from a long story (from the LHCb-eLog): 6107 28-Mar 04:01 ...

Tip: Automatic reload of URLs in Opera
Hi, a question from Harbles at the US/LHC-Blog brought me to this and I think it may be of interest for others too: don’t know about other browsers but Opera has a feature for automatic reload in adjustable intervals. Simply right-click at an open web-page and select the "feature automatic reload" o...

Re: S C I E N C E
Yes I read that, but the point is - does the number of cosmic rays influencing our solar system is smaller than previously thought? Why do you think so? We only know about cosmic rays because we "see" them in our atmosphere. If the heliosphere shields some of them, it only means that there are more...

I see that we got 2 cryo sectors in the green already... now I understand why we got so much snow here in The Netherlands this winter :angry-chillpill: :angry-chillpill: This is OT, but I think the guy who wrote the article in the following link brought together some nice data and diagrams that exp...

Re: False Vacuum
The fact that I don't have any control over these things is exactly the scary part. Sorry to annoy you, but a few more questions - 1. Does a really low temperature or a really high temperature like those in the LHC are related to vacuum bubbles? 2. If a bubble vacuum was formed, how long would it t...

Re: Uncertainty in calculations
The argument would be that infinite-series solutions in e.g. calculus, are based on strict, hard 1:1 correspondences of physical locations with physical objects. Wouldn't this be contrary to quantum mechanics? Of course you need different math. formulas to describe different things, or more apt for...
