Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

Yes, they do ... you read way too much into the word "explode". The atoms themselves are just fine, they just moved out of the area visible in the experiment. Moving 10^4 atoms 20cm to the side does not require very much energy. Nuclear fission has nothing to do whatsoever with it. And yes, if the a...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

The interesting thing is that the composition of BEC is highly-unstable, and dischargeable, in the same way that primed plutonium is unstable; firing neutrons and left-over-energy. What do we know about the energy and the particles that are flying around during a Bosenova? Quote from the guys doing...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

Anyway the quote is a good one because it talks about hydrogen molecules and not atoms but that's not relevant, what is important is that the wise-guy says: The two fermions that make up a hydrogen atom (a proton and an electron) combine their spins of 1/2 each to a total spin of 0 or 1, which make...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

My ass is usually covered quite nicely, thanks for asking :D I'll try one last time: In 1976 L. H. Nosanow and W. C. Stwalley [3] suggested that spin-polarized atomic hydrogen would retain its gaseous state down to arbitrarily low temperature. The single fermionic proton and electron combine to form...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

@MagneticTrap: The answer to your riddle is rather easy. Imagine you look through a microscope at some object on the slide. Then someone suddenly bumps against the table, and the object disappears. Would you assume that a micro black hole just ate your object? No, of course not. Same thing happened ...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

No, it is not my assumption. The room temperature example happens inside a solid block of matter, the objects in BEC are not real particles but quasi-particles. Thus, no explosion of particles outward and no scattering particles. No, atoms are not "a configuration of bosons", atoms are at most a con...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

I'm sorry, but I'd really suggest you read up what the words you keep using actually mean. It is not my assumption ... to quote from the NIST article: In a Bose-Einstein condensate, virtually all the atoms in the ultra-cold gas fall into the lowest-energy quantum mechanical state. ... The condensate...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

The link you gave speaks of a BEC of magnons. A magnon is not an atom, but an excitation state of the electrons in an atom. The bosenova experiment dealt with a BEC of atoms, which needs 10^-7K. True, and in both case the result of the experiment was BEC. And in only one case is a bosenova possible...

The link you gave speaks of a BEC of magnons. A magnon is not an atom, but an excitation state of the electrons in an atom. The bosenova experiment dealt with a BEC of atoms, which needs 10^-7K. And no, an atom is still an atom even if it is part of a BEC. A BEC is created by cooling down a cloud of...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

I'm not really sure where the connection between LHC and BEC is. As far as I know, BEC can be achieved by cooling gas clouds of certain (not all) atoms in a trap down to 170 nK, about 7 orders of magnitude colder than the LHC magnets. 7 Orders of magnitude is larger than the difference in temperatur...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

Is there any reason behind it? If there was a strange activity in LHCb, then why would they need to lock other detectors? I'm pretty sure it was the other way around. Some detectors were "locked", thus the track reconstruction software was in a weird mode and produced these wiggly lines. You're aga...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

Actually, the explanation is very simple. No particle detector actually measures tracks of the particles. They all consist of layers which have a certain probability to detect the passage of a particle through the layer (called a "hit"). In LHCb, there are no layers inside the magnet (the white bloc...
