Wow. It is cool, and a bit sad, to actually see what caused the delay of several months. But anyway, we're almost there.

Re: October 2021 Beam Tests
Beam test summary in these slides from Evian: https://indico.cern.ch/event/1077835/contributions/4533367/ That's a pretty good read. What I learnt from there are a few things I didn't know yet: Even CERN engineers are fallible :D , as proven by a magnet with swapped polarity The ULO didn't stop the...

Re: October 2021 Beam Tests
The "ULO" has been identified as a buckled RF finger, so sector 23 will be warmed up for an intervention. This delays the restart by several weeks. (However, better to catch it now than then!) I see S23 is at room temperature now; I guess they're already fixing it as we speak. And then the way for ...

Frustrating to hear the news, but I've been wondering what was going on.
Thanks for the update.

Almost there: last sector < 20K
For people who are following the LHC cooldown, we are almost there! All sectors except one are at 2.0K, and the last sector (S12) is now coming down nicely (to 5.5K at this point). Al always, you can follow it here: https://op-webtools.web.cern.ch/vistar/vistars.php?usr=LHC2 . And if all is green, t...

Re: Cooling of last sector started! (Really, this time)
And now, a few month after I thought it did, the final sectors are cooling down. Now you can see it on the Vistars page at https://op-webtools.web.cern.ch/vistar/vistars.php?usr=LHC2 Sectors 23 and 78 were above 300K (until last week, but now you can see that the cooling has begun. When I checked (A...

Re: Cooling of last sector started! (About quench training)
I can't wait for the fun to happen again! Thanks to, among other things: Better beam quality thanks to Linac4 Higher energy thanks to quench training Experiments with improved tooling BTW does anyone know if it is possible to read the elogs? They appear to be blocked, and I lost my account (because ...

Re: Cooling of last sector started! (About quench training)
Thanks for the info. If I recall the 2008 incident was caused by substandard welding on the electrical interconnects and also inadequate pressure release on the helium containment, which blew at least one magnet of it's mounts. Indeed. They underestimated the interconnection resistance. It doesn't ...

Cooling of last sector started! (About quench training)
Come folks, where are you? The excitement is slowly building up. As is clearly visible on https://op-webtools.web.cern.ch/vistar/vistars.php?usr=LHC2 , the last sector S67 started cooling! By the way the sudden peaks in all sectors where the temperature goes up to about 5K are "quenches" because the...

Magnet training is visible
Hi folks,
In the new year, the LHC is about to awaken.
You can see the magnet training activity on the cryo vistar at https://op-webtools.web.cern.ch/vistar/ ... p?usr=LHC2.
It is going to be interesting again...

CERN events public available online!
Hi folks, Even though it is very silent in here, I hope there are still folks interested: I just found out that the CERN events are available for everyone to see. You can find your favorite lecture at https://home.cern/events and all the zoom particulars are there. And there's a lot of other stuff g...

And all you need is a very thin piece of carbon foil (I calculated 1 um from the article):DCWhitworth wrote: ↑Thu Mar 11, 2021 2:59 pmThat is startlingly elegant ! Instead of changing the polarity of the magnet, you change the polarity of the beam.

H- ions in the Linac 4: why this is so clever
Hi, Stuff will be happening this year with the LHC, let's talk about it! I'll start here: I've been wondering about the strange concept of using H- ions in the Linac 4. I found out that this is actually pretty clever! Even though it is harder to get an hydrogen atom to accept an extra...
