Re: Creating "Sparks"

Energy of separated constituents = Energy of bound state (nucleus) + Binding energy. The binding energy is the work you had to *put in* to do the separating (against the binding forces), it's not "contained" in the bound state. It's also the energy *released* when you form the bound state. Ok, I'm ...

Re: Creating "Sparks"

Question is for example, is crystalized concrete a tense field of condensed gas? Not sure what you mean by tense field, I suspect you mean that there is a binding energy. I don't think concrete is a crystal (that would mean that the atoms are arranged in an ordered lattice), but it is certainly a s...

Re: Creating "Sparks"

Your initial question about runaway/avalanche breakdown is interesting, but again I can't think of an analogous subnuclear process ... You are right that there need to be a highly charged field to set something off, like in the case of nuclear fission there is the need for a heap of very reactive m...

Re: Creating "Sparks"

1. To my mind it is irresponsible to throw words with scary associations like "chain reaction" around without having at least the beginnings of a model, because as you can see people get worried. There is no proposed mechanism for a chain reaction to happen here at all. As such there is nothing to ...

Re: Creating "Sparks"

Chelle I thougth wanted to make another point here and I try to only explain the very high improbability of such a chainreaction, I am not talking about the holes stuff here. You are probably right about a chain-reaction it 's just a crazy idea and i don't think I can put in any more arguments with...

Re: Creating "Sparks"

most of the energy to produce the top quarks was not from the restmass of the proton and the antiproton but from the much higher motion energy of the 2 particles That's why I said: what happens at higher speeds/energy we don't know, that's why we test." That is about the same as the idea that the f...

Re: Creating "Sparks"

Chelle forgets to take in account 2 things: 1. whatever we do to a proton the energy coming out of the proton should not be more than rest-mass of the proton times c squared plus the energy we put in since tevatron already collided protons and antiprotons there at least the energy of the rest-mass ...

I don't mind, you haven't brought any value to the discussion despite your claim of "having a huge understanding of the universe". If you could answer my other questions with facts, than you are more than welcome.

Re: Creating "Sparks"

It this your personal conclusion after reading the LSAG-Report, or do you have some sort of a gut feeling, on what is your result based? ... It's the physics itself that ensures us the safety at this energy regime, all that knowledge of cosmos we have gathered, tells us. Tells us what? Can you expl...

Not at all by any means. The chance of LHC destroying the world is zero.

Perhaps their family thinks that it was brave, to risk their lives, trying to get some money.

Re: Creating "Sparks"

btw have you seen this story last year, is it funny or tragic? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1216735/Two-bank-robbers-killed-explosives-trying-blow-safe.html Isn't this 'instant' self karma? LOL Very funny, but since human lives are lost and to stupidity, it is tragic. Those gen...

Re: Creating "Sparks"

Call me old fashioned, but I prefer happy endings. You know, where the heroes manage to save the world and then get hit by a car the next day. ... and dies and goes to heaven. Just to be clear, are you really worried about the LHC creating a chain reaction of some sort, or do you just enjoy explori...

Re: Creating "Sparks"

What will be the results of such a chain reaction? Hi Stephen, just to tickle your imagination; I find that the movie "SuperNova" with Angela Bassett had a pretty cool intergalactic-chain-reaction as (alternative) ending, Science Fiction at it's best! Check it out, I hope it doesn't make you nervou...

Re: Creating "Sparks"

So you think the collision of the LHC will trigger some kind of a chemical reaction? What will be the results of such a chain reaction? I 'm just like everybody else, I don't know what the mechanisms of a proton are, and what makes Quarks interact the way they do. I even don't have the skills to lo...
