Re: Underground webcams

Of course there is the tale of one unlucky? experimental particle physicist in Russia, Anatoli Bugorski.

Re: Channels under CMS ?

They are usually pretty happy to announce new milestones. But there is a certain pressure not to release any hints about the Scientific results until facts have been reviewed. The best place to look would be here .lol Chris is pretty quick.. Or on the Experiments web page. See Portal for linkage.

Re: Portal links changes 11/25/09

I sent an e-mail to CERn asking about OP-Vistar info and they replied back that the issue would be addressed in an upcoming issue of the Bulletin. http://cdsweb.cern.ch/journal/CERNBulletin/2009/50/News%20Articles/?ln=en I do appreciate the efforts of those here who have already done this of course....

Re: CERN security concerns...

I am specifically referring to things that one can only see if you have a CERN external password. Yes pretty much anyone can get one but it implies that they wish to retain control of some things or at least have a record of who had access. I re-found an item from the US/LHC blog on the topic of wha...

Re: Next generation of collider to replace the LHC

As I understand it the LHC and hadron colliders in general are 'discovery' machines that use brute force to generate new heavy particles but have large uncertainties as to how much energy went into creating the observed tracks hence the need for very large data sets so statistics can be applied. A l...

Re: Access Question

The magnet enclosures are basically big thermos bottles with the space inside at a vacuum to minimize heat transfer. There are also a few thin layers of reflective foil insulation to block IR radiation. Though I imagine it is rather cool down in the tunnels on a winters day. As mentioned the greates...

Re: 30,000 AMPS, WOW!

I found this document on the Power converters used at the LHC; http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1003726/files/p411.pdf An interesting summary here; " Furthermore, the LHC experiments require large converters for their magnets (dipoles, solenoids, or toroids): – ATLAS: [20.5 kA, 18 V] for the superconduc...

Zaim I'm sorry I did'nt read completely your post to the effect that you attended in '09. Very Cool. I am a lay person science enthusiast and as such lack the tools to communicate effectively on matters of import wrt real science in general But I am fascinated by the kind of person who makes their c...

I shot cern a E-mail on this; " to press.office show details 18:25 (2 hours ago) Hello, This is probably not the right place for me to make this suggestion so if you could pass it along to the appropriate person I'd be grateful. Many people around the world are very excited about the restart of...
