Re: How can the intensity be increased?

You might find the following calculator interesting, especially the INPUT parameters and the formulae in the OUTPUT section: https://lpc.web.cern.ch/lpc/lumi2.html I think that this paper provides a quite accessible introduction to how each of these parameters contributes to the resulting luminosity...

Re: How stringent is the ~100fb for 2016-2018?

Currently at 2048b, the LHC is accumulating ~1.5fb/week for 30% stable beams which is great news, considering the lost two weeks over bad luck. If they can get to 2800 bunches, that should mean ~2fb/week bringing 25fb/year on target! At the moment they appear to be limited to 72 bunches per injecti...

I'm hopeful that the relocation would generate discussion rather than intending to be critical of the subject. :-)

Re: sub-atomic particles travelling faster than light

I would suggest that moving this post into Other topics » Off topic or (tangentially) Other topics » Quantum Philosophy might generate discussion.

Re: How easy is it to switch between 25ns and 50ns operation

I don't know what is going on with the injection kickers heating up. It's not an issue I've come across before and I don't know if it was expected or not. Presumably they will look at ways of addressing it in LS1. If it's related to bunch intensity then presumably it will be eased by 25 ns too. Fro...

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

Onwards indeed... "During the stable beams, the injectors profited to fix the problem of emittance blow-up. The investigation was so proficuous that the SPS started re-measuring low emittances as before the TS and we decided to dump to refill." The current fill had initial luminosities exceeding 530...

Re: Current Events Discussion

The incidence of the UFOs does not appear to be concentrated at the location of the events of September 2008.

Source is three weeks old: http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1294051 (at 35 mins)

Re: Current Events Discussion

At the moment the machine operators believe the UFOs to be the result of dislodged dust falling through the beam. They hope that this exists as an artefact of the machine construction rather than a systematic problem and that it will be burned away by continual use so that the number of UFO events d...
