LHCb wanted to partially-insert the VELO (to 10 mm separation) today, but it was unable to fully recover from a power-cut at the data-centre.
Does that mean VELO wasn't in until now?

Cooling plant at point 4 stopped last night, leading to failure in RF cryo. Three pressure release disks ruptured!

No beam for approximately 4 weeks
At least it was the pressure release disk, and not something worse. We know what could know wrong

Re: 2022 Operation

And now the dashboard page changed to OFFLINE UNDER REVIEW. Somebody out there must be watching us! While they are watching us, how about the "abort gap" vistar? Apparently nobody (except for me, of course 8-) ) looks at it, since is has been defunct since the last LS. I had a quick look there ever...

Re: 2022 Operation

See post by M. » Sun Aug 07, 2022 11:49 am I found the post (which wasn't trivial because of time zones :D ), but that link only shows luminosity plots. I was looking for things like real-time tune, chromaticity, and so on. Basically, what the dashboard did before it froze permanently in 2019 :-(

The Dashboard Heat Load plot
That page sounds interesting. I don't recall seeing a public URL for the heat load (or the "regular" LHC dashboard).
Could you post these URLs, please, if they are publicly accessible?

Re: 2022 Operation

Now we had an 11h hour fill. Still ended in an UFO, but I'm still happy.
As far as I know, the first fill with so many bunches (2173 bunches, of which 2160 colliding).
It is going in the right direction.

Re: 2022 Operation

I was so excited: We just had the first 2100 bunches attempt! I calculated there's almost 0.9 nanograms of protons in the LHC (which is already heavier than that before it arrives from the SPS, but let's ignore that detail). And then there was another UFO. Bummer. Let's see if the second attempt of ...

To stabilize the beams in the presence of e-cloud, we currently need strong non-linearities (chromaticity and octupoles), which are detrimental to lifetime. Also e-cloud can directly drive losses.
Thanks! That is exactly what I meant indeed.

Re: Who's around?

Who's here? Yes, it IS pretty quiet here. I do hop in every once in a while, in the hope op getting more info. It is pretty hard nowadays to get real time information: There are defunct vistars (the dashboard, specifically), and I can't get access to the elogs. But fortunately there are people here...

Re: 2022 Operation

I also get the impression beam losses are a bit more than two years ago.
Is that because of the higher beta, or from the electron cloud? Our something completely different?

Re: 2022 Operation

Are you in the egroup invited-OP-elogbook-users? Access might have been lost in the move to the new logbook system. Might be worth sending an email. Yes, I think I was. Let's give it a try. I know a few people got kicked out because somebody started calling up all these people, so I can't blame the...

I used to have access to these, but it seems to be blocked. Is this a change of policy that "fans of LHC" can't look in the logbooks anymore? I had so much fun reading these...

Re: Tonga volcano eruption detected by ALICE DCS

A nice demonstration of gas-filled particle detectors fulfilling a secondary/unintended function as barometers https://alice-collaboration.web.cern.ch/node/35254 Cool. Thanks for showing this. I had missed this one the first time. Especially the fact that they detected it three times is quite impre...

Re: 2022 Operation

Are there any current links to follow the progress for the 2022 commissioning? The existing links don’t seem to be updated any more. Same. I remember the previous run when we could follow everything, including the elogbook and so on. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be so easy anymore to get detai...
