Re: The accelerator complex from the viewpoint of a proton
Even weirder - while the proton can consider its path around the main ring only 4 m long, it does not see the ring shrunk to 4 m circumference. The component of the ring size perpendicular to the proton's immediate motion is not contracted, so the ring appears squished to an oval about 2m deep and 8...

Re: Mmm how to put this...?
Heat is essentially kinetic energy of individual particles randomly distributed throughout the bulk of matter. From that point of view, each particle collision in LHC is similar to what happens when two particles of extremely hot matter interact with each other, exchanging their energy. Extremely la...

Re: TED - How we explore unanswered questions in physics
Interesting story. To be honest, I don't think there's anything wrong on LHC guys publishing information about a promising bump. They're paid to collect the data, analyze them, and report on their finds and that's exactly what they did. But the fact that there was over 500 papers written about it at...

Hi Axel, if you're after a job at CERN, go visit this page. If you meet the requirements, I'm sure they'll be happy to hire you.

Re: Is there a mind of God?
The best answer I know as to the nature of reality is that we do live in a universe which can be described by mathematics. What lies outside mathematics? In that case it is more than just a tool. Mathematics originated from our daily experience. There is no real "one" in the universe, all things ar...

Re: Is there a mind of God?
... the nature of reality could be mathematical That's the point where science becomes religion. There's no proof for that, actually universe keeps proving us wrong: What used to be nice and simple set of rules with Newton became a mess with Einstein, even more mess with Quantum Mechanics, and nobo...

I would like to point out that cosmic rays are hitting earth all the time I think we should all realize that cosmic rays are hitting everything in the universe all the time, including Moon, Jupiter, our Sun, supernovas, neutron stars, or black hole accretion disks. Plus they're certainly occasional...

Beautiful x-rays of the short at the end of the Sunday's presentation. Pity there's no description, I'm still unsure if the problem is the apparent pile of debris or the wire-like thing. https://indico.cern.ch/event/382659/contribution/6/material/slides/0.pdf Whatever it is I hope they'll succeed wi...

Re: BBC:Collider hopes for a 'super' restart / SUSY Weasel W
It's always ultimately the media people who decides what will and what won't make a headline. Being natural result of evolution in communication with/through media, it's widespread knowledge that you won't get publicity unless you claim a breakthrough or global doom. Belief in correctness of SUSY is...
