Re: MUFO?

There is a LBOC-Meeting this afternoon and it seems to be planned partly about the ULO.

Slides should appear here:

Re: What is a BSRI?

It may be a device that measures the beam position, intensity or some other parameter indirectly
through synchroton radiation.

Re: MUFO?

The latest news is that they tried to scrape the ULO with a "nominal" beam, that is a single bunch of about 100 billion protons in this case. This resulted in the ULO being 1 mm lower, so it is now 6 mm under the center of the tube. This might be enough. :shifty: ... Wow, don't mess with CERN peopl...

Re: MUFO?

There are news, it looks like there is a big object in the lower part of the beam pipe:

My guess: Its an M8 or M10 nut or bolt ;-)

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up

But the good news is that these 8 weeks are going to be very exciting! In a way, they're more interesting than the production runs. I love it see how they manage to learn from every measurement (and every mistake) they make. One example is how they handled the earth fault in sector 23: it must have...

Re: MUFO?

They suspected frozen gas, that could explain that its gone after heating. Would it be possible that the proton beam attracts flakes of it due to electrostatic force? If so, it would provide a scenario for a bouncing particle: Neutral particle attracted by positive charge, after contact it is charge...

Re: MUFO?

In the slides from the morning meetings they call it multiple UFOs because they have the strange behavior of creating a pattern of multiple loss spikes. It can be seen on page 18 of the minutes from today, in earlier ones too: https://indico.cern.ch/event/385865/contribution/1/material/slides/0.pptx...

E-Log access

In today's morning meeting there is an explanation on page 9.
If there was an attack I doubt that there will be access to joe average again.
But if there is more to know about that I would be happy about a PM.

Re: 2011 Events Discussion

There are some reason why they keep the fills for a long time: Every filling process has its own risks, it seems to be not very stable at the moment. A turn around time of 2h is a rare exception, usually they need much longer. In the last weeks they had so much short fills, I think they are very hap...

Re: 2011 Events Discussion

I have not seen a value in any of the Vistars or elsewhere for the running fiill
but here is a "supertable" with really a lot of parameters. I haven't looked at it in detail.
https://j2eeps.cern.ch/test-supertable/
You can export and download it as excel file and do your own statistics.

Re: 2011 Events Discussion

Dump! Arrgh, shit!, that would have been a record fill.
I saw very short a luminosity something about 1350Hz/µb and they had 100MJ/beam in,
obviously with more bunch intensity than the last fills.
I hope this was not an UFO, they only waited for 1/2h between injection and ramp this
time.

Re: A bit of global warming

So you have nothing to offer than the same speech again. Opinions from one guy with ties to the oil industry (which I have shown you evidence for). I tend to stay with the IPCC and their reports where 640 scientists contributed to. As opposed to the loud crowd of non scientists who speak of a hoax o...
