Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up

I 've seen no reference to the startup progress site: hcc.web.cern.ch/hcc/

much of interest there including links to daily progress reports.

Things were going so well! Is anyone aware of the reasons why sector 4-5 is so uncooperative?

Blast! Were we blasted?

I noticed an alarming spike on the Vistar luminosity screen. LHCb seeing 13000 ub.s^-1 instantaneous luminosity ! (Target luminosity 400 ub.s^-1) After they dumped fill 2875 (15+hr, 172/pb) they switched polarity on LHCb and loaded a light fill for IP optimization. (I have a luminosity page screen g...

Re: How is the quality of the beam being currently improved?

Good catch, I had also noted the reduced bunch intensities. I also noted that a previous fill had an impressively tight range of bunch intensities. They seem to be making strides in the injection process after some earlier problems. I wonder if they lowered the maximum allowed bunch intensity to lim...

Active Hypercycle acronym angst - 10 Aps ?

 I'm embarrassed to admit I can't guess what "A"s per second they are referring to by Aps in the hypercycle. Google searches combining Aps with various LHC terms proved fruitless, and searching "LHC Hypercycle" turned up only a Feb 2010 post to the What Do the Displays Mean? topic back when th...

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

The main reason for the extension is technical, and not Physics driven
Does this mean there is some reason that they couldn't begin implementing the improvements planned for LS1 until later next year?

Re: 90m physics?

This my layman's take on your questions, and if an expert cares to disabuse me of any notions expressed below, I would appreciate it. I have been curious about Beta* for some time, so your question spurred me to look further. Thanks to Mike DeForster of Cornell I was able to use the math on pp 16-20...

Re: Why So QUIET ??? Machine Development !!!!!

Thanks Chriwi, DC. I appreciate your insights pcatom, an excellent explanation. 25ns is the distance between 2 adjacent bunches which are delivered from the injectors. It only makes sense in multi-bunch injections. Sorry, I was facetiously riffing on the single bunch pilot probe that they inj...

Re: 5 sigma Higgs !!!

what a wonderful early present 2012 has delivered. :D  i was struck by the fact that the diphoton channel showed an excess above SM expectations (3/2 sigma?), and it's been pointed out that the relative absence of a tau-tau signal may also portend that this not exactly the SM Higgs. :th...

Re: What do the displays mean ?

thanks for the reply. I'm not so sure about the instantaneous x 3600. fill 2736 showed Atlas: 6107.8 instantaneous (x3600=20.2/pb) ...........................22.9 integrated/h --------------------CMS: 5997.7 instantaneous (x3600=21.6/pb) ...........................21.8 integrated/h this was not long...

Re: What do the displays mean ?

I was curious about the Integrated/h value listed on the LHC dashboard page.

Would this be the (actual) trailing hour, the current luminosity multiplied out to an hour, or (extrapolated) a projection given current decay rates ?

LHC-statistics web page quality control?

Did anyone notice that The LHC Performance and Statistics page has some problems? :crying-green: I've noticed several times that they were 30+hours behind in posting fills and sometimes had errors in integrated luminosity where a previous fill had been duplicated. This week all of the Fill Start Tim...
