Re: 2012 Events Discussion

I just looked at the cryo page, and at the moment it's all green.

Re: 2011 Events Discussion

I see from the Cryo status page that they've started cooling the arc magnets.

However, the lhcportal Progress link still points to last year's "latest news". Is there something like that for this year?

Re: Neutrinos go faster then light !

Tomaso Dorigo says that ICARUS says nah to Superluminal neutrinos. http://www.science20.com/quantum_diaries_survivor/icarus_refutes_operas_superluminal_neutrinos-83684 They're assuming that the neutrinos are traveling as normal neutrinos, which would quickly lose energy from emitting the weak force...

ATLAS and CMS are both over 5fb-1 now.

Re: About Higgs - Seems that the signal is fainting

Whether this is good or bad depends on your point of view. The Higgs is the most boring way to plug a hole in the Standard Model. If there's no Higgs, then there must be something much more interesting out there, waiting to be found.

Re: Vacuum Bubbles

The size of a proton is 0.1 nm (10^-10) That's atomic size. The size of a proton is around 10^-15 m. Next to that the LHC detectors might produce 10^34 collisions per second and per cm^2. ( source ) That's not the number of collisions. That's what you multiply by the extremely small cross section t...

Re: 2011 Events Discussion

The portal's LHC "Progress" link needs to be updated. The new link is:

Re: Merit of different collision types

Is it possible that collisions between two very elementary particle such a the electron and positron, would be too "simple" and would not yeld any interresting (new) particles such as the (in-) famous Higgs? When an electron and positron annihilate, they can produce a virtual photon or virtual Z0 (...

Re: Merit of different collision types

Actually, LEP also used electron-positron collisions. With electron-positron collisions the particles annihilate and nearly all the energy is available for the collision products. Also, the amount of energy is fairly consistent and known. And there is no special requirement imposed on the products, ...

Some of the portal links are being redirected. For instance:

In the ATLAS section the "LIVE collisions" link.
In the LHCb section the "Status" link.

Re: Current Events Discussion

how much of the beam comissioning they are doing now will need to be repeated when they run at 7Tev? They will have a much better understanding of the machine by the time they go to 7TeV. And many of the problems that they've solved will stay solved. So re-commissioning at 7TeV should go significan...

Re: Let's go hump hunting!

Electrical interference can be caused by an alternative ground path. Here's an example. Assume we're in the US where many electrical outlets have a 120VAC hot wire and the return is near ground potential. If you plug in an appliance that draws current, then the current in the hot wire and the curren...

The beams are still going, and with good lifetimes, too!

And LHCb just had a bizarre event: http://lblogbook.cern.ch/Shift/100401_0 ... 4210_0.jpg
