Re: Mini Black Holes
If I was smart enough to understand the maths and concluded for myself that mini black holes are dangerous, I'd start immediately looking for ways to be able to detect these black holes (as they are micro black holes they have micro mass, only curved very strongly in space, so I'd say they do not ge...

Thats it folks .... See you all next year
Says LHC Page 1,
well, I certainly have a lot of catching up to do, the more I look at the logs, the less I understand, good thing we have some time to study now !
It was just wonderful being able to watch the journey from so close, I'm still amazed by how well things went.
Nice job !

One of my all-time favorites (Garrett Lisi looking at particle physics without equations and still be able to find beautiful structures): http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/garrett_lisi_on_his_theory_of_everything.html From the same website Brian Cox (if you want some cue's on Higgs and how particle ...

Re: Daily Schedules and Hiccups
is this the reason for a month of no beams? to sort cyro out? seems to have annoyed the beam dept alot since turn on There are several reasons for the shutdown, like maintenance actions that have to be done but also the LHC consumes a tremendous amount of energy in the form of electricity and the c...

Regarding "summer school" downloadable presentations take a look here: http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceOtherVi ... icecompact for the 2009 versions.

Learn more about LHC, experiments, physics
I was lucky to be able to visit CERN and the CMS experiment earlier this year. I live in Belgium about 850 km from CERN and we went over there with the "volkssterrenwacht" (would translate something like "amateur space observatory") Urania. A small report about this visit can be found at http://www....

Re: Beam Xover questions
Didn't know the crossing of beams had a different orientation in Atlas/Alice versus CMS/LHCb, so then I ask myself: why ? Is it so "by accident" or is there a reason to use both horizontal and vertical ? and why not diagonal ?

Re: Beam Xover questions
Here some not too well structured thoughts ... As you can see in the following link: http://hcc.web.cern.ch/hcc/beam/by_beam.php the "crossover" points are located at the experiment points (Atlas, Cms, Alice, LHCb). They are not actually showing as an "X" layout you can see crossover at one point, b...

[quote=I thought the major problem with String Theory was that it was unprovable ?[/quote] The "size" (or "scale" if you want) of strings is a multiple order of magnitudes smaller then the scale reachable by LHC energies. As a consequence no direct observation of strings will be possible by the LHC'...
