Re: Christmas Break Question

No, actually, in about 5 or 6 days (According to the CERN bulletin, December 16th for machine winding down) CERN will shutdown the LHC for Christmas vacation and supposedly return in January with no beam till February. I'd say expect 3.5 tev collisions (by my own estimation, not Gorlikian theory or ...

Christmas Break Question

Hey All, First off, Happy Hannukah to anyone who is celebrating this afternoon. With the holidays in mind, I read in one of the LHCB meeting minutes from this week that the machine will be shut off at 8am sharp on December 17th (for us on the East Coast of the US, that will be in the latenight hours...

Re: ** current events and discussion **

1092 GEV 1.092 TEV with Both Beams as I write..... Does this mean we may be having those "unintentional" collisions that we had on November 23rd from them in total secrecy? :D Well.... Merry Christmas! Santa brought the Physics Department at many universities new textbook material and lecture materi...

Re: TeV collisions on friday night?

If you click on "latest news," the Friday night collisions are just high intensity 450 Gev collisions according to that one. I know the original plan was to get 3 short shifts of 1.1 Tev collisions if they were lucky.
By the way, when does their Christmas break start?

Re: *** COLLISION ALERT ***

Another Cryogenics problem...... Thank Goodness for this commissioning period, they can work out all of the kooks and errors by Christmas so that when the real meat and potatoes come in after the break, it can go down much smoother.

Re: *** COLLISION ALERT ***

Go to CMS Experiment and the "Latest Updates" and it's on there.... it looks like they did it for a short time..... It's not on Twitter (but then again, I'm guessing the Public Relations office, who probably runs the Tweets/press releases, runs on a reduced staff on weekends) like I thought it would...

Re: *** COLLISION ALERT ***

A picture of page 1 (With words) is worth 1000 Words.... Once again they've surprised us (though only by about 3 hours): 5 DEC, 13:10, COLLISIONS! **From the CMS Latest Updates Page at 13:04pm** LHC is currently colliding. Beam intensities are about 3.5E9 protons/bunch. The minbias trigger rate is o...

Re: ** Current problem **

I figured he was joking..... I live only 40 miles from the RHIC and hope to visit it one day.... I know, the tin foil hatters are nutts! One day someone will turn their microwave oven on and destroy their own tin foil hat (and their insides).

Re: ** Current problem **

What do you mean violent explosion???? Sorry to be a pain, but these doomsayers (as nutts as they are) make me nervous at times.
