Re: Hello from Canada

Good day! I've been following the LHC experiments for a few years. I've been patiently waiting for the higher energy collision experiments to begin, and highly anticipate their results. I wish I could be part of this in some way. Becoming a physicist wasn't even in the vocabulary of my school when ...

Re: What is AGK

Hardwired in the sense that it cannot easily be changed - we are, after all talking about a timing synchronization system at the ns level. It is an integral part of the injection and dump system and is mostly implemented in analog electronics

Re: What is AGK

You answered it yourself: AGK = Abort Gap Keeper. Is is a hardwired part of the beam dump system to ensure that beam is not injected into the abort gap. The abort gap is a region in time where there is a gap in the beam to allow the beam dump kickers to rise to their full field in order to extract t...

Re: What is a BSRI?

It stands for Beam Synchrotron Radiation Interferometry. Is is a test set-up to extract the beam size from the BSRT light without some of the inherent errors in the normal system.

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up

That's very gracious of you, considering how busy you are (and all you guys and gals working on bring-up are heroes by the way!). So here's one: what guarantees that the orbital tune set-up at 0.45 TeV will work at higher energies? It won't - not perfectly anyway. We use feed farward - ie go up the...

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up

That's the problem - I had no idea that 8 weeks was a minimum ! I would love to be able to come along for the ride and watch this great beast rise up again, but I have no real insight into what's being done nor what to expect. This despite having a physics degree! I suspect many would enjoy coming ...

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up

But the good news is that these 8 weeks are going to be very exciting! In a way, they're more interesting than the production runs. I love it see how they manage to learn from every measurement (and every mistake) they make. One example is how they handled the earth fault in sector 23: it must have...

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up

After today's excitement, I'm disappointed that we have to wait 8 weeks more to see collisions at 13 TeV. This conservative schedule seems to be largely about safety concerns. Have you any idea what is involved in re-commissioning the LHC for operation? 8 weeks is optimistic if everything goes to p...

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up

It is not a question of quality. All the magnets are of very high quality! However, some of them seem to be a bit forgetful when it comes to their training ... we have to send them to refresher courses. During the cold-testing at the time of LHC construction the Firm3 magnets tended to have a first ...

Re: FCC

Cosmic rays tend to interact with atoms in the upper atmosphere. These primary interactions are not directly seen on the earths surface. Instead it is the secondary showers of particles from the primary collision that eventually appear in the detectors. The advantage of accelerator based collisions ...

Re: Son of LHC

It is a little more complex than that ... but not much. We study both lepton and hadron versions. The lepton version is dominated by synchrotron radiation considerations and therefore RF accelerating voltage. The hadron version is dominated by our ability to bend the beams and therefore ma...

Having said that ... it won't be a piece of cake either! A lot of technologies will need to be pushed to make it realistic and affordable.
