LHC should restart beams around beginning of next february after the xmas break.
This is a very recent schedule change. There is to much things to do during this small shutdown that it has been extended.
So maybe there is an opportunity to go down, but I guess under very specific reasons.

Re: Underground webcams
Catching a beam at full energy is like taking ~80 kilos of TNT (exploding, of course).
No, you don't want to be in the way .

Re: Underground webcams
We had some fun moment about imagining what it could be, and even more, how to modulate the sound by shapping the dump material to produce some kind of funny noise when a beam is dumped .

Re: Underground webcams
I got more news about that. I asked a friend working on beam dumps and collimator. About beam dump, as it makes the material going from a low temparature to a high one, it deforms the metal. The chock wave can bounce back several times. Thus, when it meet air it produces sound. He has to check for t...

Re: *** COLLISION ALERT ***
I am on it, but with another client than their java tool (gaim).
I am using irc.efnet.ch server, which is a server in geneva.

Re: *** COLLISION ALERT ***
For IRC, some java applet/webstart exist, but you still need to open, and most likely register, a chat room on a irc server.
Also, today IRC clients are integrated in a lot of IM softwares.

Re: *** COLLISION ALERT ***
It might has been a try of both beam having more than one bunch at the same time.

Re: *** COLLISION ALERT ***
From LHCb log book :
This makes it clear now.Beam 1 with 4 bunches was kept for 45 minutes and then dumped. LHC page 1 is stuck again (LHC is working on
fixing it).

don't you think this "Ramp" in the schedule is quite interesting?
Ramp until now was used to reach higher energy (1.18 TeV for instance ^^).

Re: *** First science results ***
Yes, you need a statistical proof, even if later we could show picture of "the first whatever-particle detected". You still need to be sure that it is not a coincidencce.
It would be actually better if two experimental setup could prove a new particle. Hence ATLAS and CMS for instance ^^.

Re: WELCOME to my brand new LHC forum
You can't become part of the grid because the unit of data needed for one analysis is way to big too send it to individual computers.
From what I understand from their webpage, it's rather used for other analysis/simulation that need smaller data source.
